Information about IIFT Admission test

The IIFT question paper has not followed any strict pattern over the years. Though the total number of questions in the paper is between 100 and 150 only, the sectional break-up of questions and the weights allotted to different sections vary every year. Quite often in IIFT papers the sections are further divided into sub-sections, though there are no cut-off marks for sub-sections.

The Data Interpretation questions in IIFT are generally very cumbersome (not difficult though) and so not very productive. Some Quant questions are directly picked from previous years’ CAT papers. General Awareness is a mixed bag with questions from topics such as FDI, Navratnas and SEZ making a regular appearance. A judicious selection of questions, especially in LRDI and QA sections, is paramount.

Given below is a synopsis of the last two IIFT papers.
IIFT 2010-12 Admission test: The paper had 122 questions divided into four sections. Unlike previous years, it was clearly mentioned in the instructions that the paper would have sectional cut-offs. Each question had four options and the extent of negative marking was 1/3rd of the marks allotted to the question (as against 1/4th in IIFT 2009-11 Admission test). The break-up of the sections is given below.

Logical Reasoning & Data Interpretation (34 marks) – 34 questions
Quantitative Ability (28 marks) – 28 questions
General Awareness (8 marks) – 20 questions
English (30 marks) – 40 questions

Part–1 (15 marks) RC – 15 questions
Part–2 (15 marks) EU – 25 questions

Total (100 marks) – 122 questions

Though no official figures were made available, the cut-off (in General category) was estimated to be around 37.40 marks. All the students were awarded 4 extra marks in Logical Reasoning & Data Interpretation to compensate for 4 incorrect questions. So the effective cut-off was around 33.40 which was still higher than the cut-off for IIFT 2009-11 Admission test which was around 27.50 for General category candidates.

IIFT 2011-13 Admission test: The paper had 135 questions divided into four sections. The major change from previous year’s paper was the absence of a mention that there would be any sectional cut-offs. Like previous year’s paper, each question had four options and the extent of negative marking was 1/3rd of the marks allotted to the question. The break-up of the sections is given below.

Logical Reasoning & Data Interpretation (35 marks) – 35 questions
Quantitative Ability (30 marks) – 30 questions
General Awareness (12 marks) – 30 questions
English (23 marks) – 40 questions

Part–1 (10.5 marks) RC – 15 questions
Part–2 (12.5 marks) EU – 25 questions

Total (100 marks) – 135 questions

The cut-off (in General category) was estimated to be around 35.74 marks, with no sectional cut-offs. All the students were awarded 2 extra marks in Quantitative Ability because of 2 incorrect/ambiguous questions. So the effective cut-off was around 33.74 and was almost the same as that of IIFT 2010-12 Admission test. Eleven hundred candidates (for around 280 seats) were shortlisted for the second stage from a total of 57,000 applicants.

The weights given by IIFT to various components in preparing the final merit list were:

65% - Written test
10% - Essay
10% - GD
15% - PI
