Summary of the Interview at S.P.Jain Institute of Management and Research
Held at Mumbai in February 2003


There were three rounds:
Round 1: Group Interview
Batch size: 6
Time: 40 to 50 min. (Elimination round)

Round 2: Group Interview
Batch size: 6
Time: 40 to 50 min.

Round 3: Written Test: Management Aptitude Test (MAT)
Time: 55 min.

Round 1: Elimination Round

A group of 6 candidates was formed per panel of 2 to 4 interviewers consisting of faculty, psychologists and students of final year of SP Jain.
It starts with an introduction of the panel and then the candidates are asked to introduce themselves.
The introduction is followed by a group discussion between the candidates for about 5-6 minutes. The panel may change the topic of discussion in between and also ask each person to speak on it. After the discussion the candidates are asked questions (as in an interview).
For some groups, there were three topics to be discussed and not a single question, apart from introduction, was asked.

Topics of Discussion:
  1. What should be there in the coming budget and what should be its objectives?
  2. What is the biggest problem India facing right now and its remedies?
  3. How will you implement a new manufacturing system without the involvement of the government?
  4. How's our economy is different from China's?
  5. A team of six members has to be send to a new created planet
  6. Among yourselves, select who should be sent and justify why?
  7. What are the different ways through which you can contribute the society?
  8. Do you think that India's economy is strong, if not why?

The questions asked were based on the profile of the candidate, his/her interest area and the introduction. Why MBA or why Finance or why Marketing was asked to most of the candidates.

Questions on family values, candidates own learning from them, his hobbies, and interests and how his personality was influenced from them were also asked.

Sample Questions:
  1. Why MBA?
  2. Why MBA from S P Jain?
  3. What is your Goal?
  4. Where do you want to see yourself 5/10 years down the line?
  5. How MBA will help you to achieve your Goal?
  6. Why Finance or operation?
  7. Since you are working in IBM as a S/W Developer, Why do you want to shift in Marketing?

After the completion of Round 1 a shortlist of the successful candidates is announced and they stay back for Round 2. On an average about half the group is shortlisted for Round 2.

Round 2:

It is same as Round 1 but questions are more personal. Their emphasize was on understanding each and every candidate as well as his desire to do MBA and why does he want to shift towards a particular specialization. This round may or may not have a group discussion.

Round 3: Management Aptitude Test (MAT)

It includes questions (subjective), which test your values, interests, likes, dislikes etc. similar to the questions that have been answered in the application form.

Sample Questions:
  1. What do you think about yourself?
  2. What do your parents think about you as a person?
  3. What do your friends think about your behaviour especially in a group?
  4. How will you approach a problem?
  5. How family values affect your life?
  6. How do you spare your time?
  7. What are your hobbies?
  8. What are your strengths and how they help you to accomplish your goal?
  9. What are your weaknesses and what is your plan to remove them?

Here they wish to test the consistency in your answers that you have written in the Essay form and what is reflected from your personality in Interview.

In all it was found that they were short listing people on the basis of his Ability of convincing, communication skills, how precise were your statements, your education background, working organization, relevant experience (job profile), and values/ethics.
