Eligibility Criteria |
|
| |
-
The one criterion
that needs to be met to apply to
a B-school is a graduation in any
field with a minimum of 40%-50%.
-
Students
who are appearing for their final-year
examination of a Bachelor's Degree
can also apply.

Here is an overview
of the academic criteria laid down by some
of the premier institutes in India: |

Recently, the six
IIMs announced that only students who score
a minimum of 50% in the qualifying exam will
be eligible for CAT. This was proposed as
one of the measures to reduce the number
of test takers and reduce the burden the
admission process on the faculty.

Which B-school Forms to
Fill? |
|
| |
There are close to
1000 B-schools in India. It is unrealistic
to apply to all. Here are a few
areas you must keep in mind
while selecting a B-school.
|
|
| |
|
|
| |
Your
scoring pattern: Take your Mock CATs
(practice tests structured on the actual paper
pattern). Keep track and evaluate your Mock
CAT performances. It will give you a fair
idea about the institutes you should aim at.
Refer to the table below to check which B-schools
you need to apply to through an analysis of
your percentiles. |

Your
graduation: There are certain
institutes that restrict their admissions
to engineers only. These include NITIE,
Mumbai and all institutes covered through
the JMET exam. If you are not an engineer
you are ineligible to apply to these B-schools.
|
|
| |
|
|
| |
Your
interests: Understand and evaluate
your interests. If your interest lies in a
specific field then you need to target those
B-schools which offer those specialized courses.
|
|

- Media
Management, Account Management,
Client Servicing, Market Research
- MICA
- Rural Management
- IRMA
- Agriculture
& Forest Management - Agri

- Human Resources, Personnel
Management, Industrial Relations - XLRI (PM&IR Course),
TISS, MDI (HR Course), UBS
- International
Trade - IIFT, SIIB

Note: Inspite
of these institutes being great in their
own disciplines, if you get into an IIM,
please feel assured that you would be
taught everything that is taught in these
B-schools as well, perhaps not in as much
depth, but it would still make more sense
to take admission into an IIM over MICA or
IIFT. The only exceptions to this would be
IRMA & IIFM where the field is so super-specialized
that the IIMs are unlikely
to cover it, and if you have your heart
set on a career in this field,
go for it. |

Application Procedure |
|
| |
Acquire form |
|
| |
Most B-schools publish
an announcement regarding their entrances
and applications in almost all national dailies.
If the B-school is of your interest, it is
recommended that you do not wait till the
last date to buy the entrance application
forms, as there have been incidents in the
past where the B-schools have run out of forms.
Forms are available in B-schools, banks and
some B-schools accept online applications. application forms
Students tend to get confused between the
B-school application forms and entrance exam
forms. For example, CAT is an entrance exam
conducted by the IIMs, but is applicable
for admissions not only in the IIMs but
also other B-schools such as MDI, SP Jain,
MICA, UBS, IMI, etc. A student needs to apply
separately to these institutes for admissions.
Application forms of some B-schools, such as ICFAI, KJ Somaiya,
SCMHRD, Nirma and Welingkar are also available
at Career Launcher centers.
|
|
| |
|
|
| |
Dispatch form |
|
| |
-
Fill
and send back the completed application
forms to the respective B-schools
with the other required documents
before the deadline.
-
Documents
requested in most cases are pay-in
slip of application forms, a
copy of the Bachelor's degree certificate or
a provisional
certificate if your degree has not been
completed, or a certificate from
the college/institution that you
are currently in for your final
year of graduation, a copy of SC/ST
and/or Disability Certificate, if
applicable. This list, however, varies from
case to case.
|
|
|
| |
|
|
| |
Confirm with an
admit card |
|
| |
The B-schools send
you an admit card, which confirms your registration
for their respective entrance exams. The admit
card usually contains all the details regarding
the entrance, such as venue, date, time, seat
number and registration number. |

Reservations |
|
| |
Reservations vary
from institute to institute and are generally
dependent on whether the institute is government
funded or private. Some of the common reservation
in government funded institutes/universities
that offer MBA are: |
|
| |
1.
People with disability: As per the
"Persons with Disabilities Act, 1995",
3% reservation is provided for candidates
with disability. |
|
| |
2. Caste:
As per the government of India requirements,
15% of seats are reserved for the scheduled
caste and 7.5 % for the scheduled tribe candidates.
There are other reservations on a case-to-case
basis. |
|
| |
3. State Reservations:
Certain B-schools have fixed
quota allotted to applicants of
the state to which they belong.
For example, 60% of the seats in
all Maharashtra B-schools affiliated
to the CET are reserved for Home
University candidates, and at XIM Bhubhaneshwar
two-thirds of the total seats are reserved
for candidates from Orissa. |
