“Management expertise is not just required in a corporate set up…it’s also required in other sectors… But the need is definitely there."
Here is an excerpt from a tête-à-tête that Pegasus had with
Dr. Gopal Iyengar.

Q1. What do B-schools look for in an MBA aspirant?

B-schools are a via media between the MBA aspirants and the industry. B-schools look at the needs of the industry. Then they mark the aspirants on competency that's required. Then the B-schools build them up in the functional and general aspects.

Q2. What skill sets do MBAs acquire during the course?

MBA students get three fundamental things. MBAs are given concepts. They do not have to go and look and experience a million practices. They get this learning ready-made in the form of concepts. They get exposed to case studies: case studies are nothing but orientation to practice.
During summers, they get in touch with the industry… but they have not yet left the school. Hence without making mistakes at jobs…. They starts getting exposure to the industry norms and values.

Q3. One offbeat career path you would like to suggest the future managers to take up?

My suggestion to all MBAs, take the much envied "cushion jobs." And from the power of being at the helm of affairs, contribute what you can to the immediate society.

Q4. Is there an overflow of MBAs in the job market?

Though the number looks huge…. Corporate India still needs managers. Management expertise is not just required in a corporate set up…it's also required in other sectors…which might not be great in terms of salary or status, but the need is definitely there.

Q5. While selecting an institutes, what should students look for: faculty or placements?

The institutes should train for more things than just a placement. By saying that I am not ignoring the importance of placements…I accept that students come to B-schools for placements…but the factors that determine what he is and how is he placed for the placement depends on the faculty and the ideology of the institutes.

Q6. One myth about MBA that you would like to break?

MBA is not a replacement for experience. You will have to work as hard as the non-MBAs. You may have to work smarter if not harder…but you have to work.

Q7. Your message to the future managers…
Get out there…it' s not just about managing…its about creating.
