| TTE takes a ride to B-school |
| |
KOLKATA: At first sight, Anurag Verma looks like any other fresher on the Indian Institute of Management-Calcutta (IIM-C) campus. Tall and stout, the 23-year-old melts easily into the crowd of new arrivals. Its tough to spot him actually, but when one does so, he is a show stealer. For, Anurag is a travelling ticket examiner (TTE) with Northern Railway on lien to study at the prestigious B-school.
Down-to-earth and rustic in parts, the lad from Kanpur was checking tickets on trains till May 30. He was actually on a train in the Moradabad-Kanpur sector when the news reached his home. He had cracked this years Common Admission Test (CAT) and found a place on the IIM-C rolls.

| |
Q1: I hear that CAT will be held online. Is that correct?
A1: CAT is going to be a computer based test (CBT) and not internet based test (IBT). I.e. Candidate does not take the test on an internet site. Q2: I hear that CAT will be a computer adaptive test. Is that correct?
A2: No, CAT is not going to be a computer adaptive test.
Q3: Will the format of the test change?
A3: The format of the test will remain more or less the same except that a candidate reads question on a computer terminal and clicks on the correct answer.
Q4: Can I take the test from any computer?
A4: No. A candidate will take the test only at designated test venues in about 25 cities across India. Detailed information will be provided in the CAT 2009 advertisement.
Q5: But how do I do rough-work and calculations while arriving at the answers?
A5: At the test venue, each candidate will be seated at a desk with a computer terminal and he/she will be provided with a writing pad with numbered pages for calculations. After the test, candidate must leave the pad including all the pages in it at the desk. Rough-work cannot be done on any other paper/sheet as nothing will be allowed to be taken inside the test hall.

| UK may emerge as most preferred study destination |
| |
MUMBAI: The UK may once again emerge a preferred destination for higher studies among Indian students as a recent spate of attacks on the current batch in Australia forces them to redraw their plans. One of the best education systems and shortest visa processing time make UK the strongest contender to replace this affordable and easy-going destination for education.
The pattern of education is the same in Australia and the UK as they both offer similar courses . And since UK enrols students in the September period versus July for Australia, this is still an open option for students , said the director of a large education consultancy firm in Mumbai. The average fee for a course in engineering or MBA is the same in the UK as that in Australia. Source: Economic Times

| Soon, foreign agency will bell the CAT |
| |
MUMBAI: In a case of reverse outsourcing, the Common Admission Test (CAT) will soon be contracted out to a foreign agency. The deal will be
sealed in May, but it is clear that the Indian bidders have lost out in the race to catch the CAT.
It was in 2008 that the IIMs announced that the CAT would go online and invited tenders from agencies with the technical expertise in conducting a test of this nature. The idea was to reduce the time faculty annually spent in administering the test that was seeing a ballooning of aspirants.
In-charge facultys responsibilities fan from identifying professors who will generate questions for the test, to short-listing supervisors and from being present in the press when the papers are printed, to personally carrying question paper trunks to centres across the country.

| MDI Gurgaon goofs up final results, withdraws list |
| |
After the Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta (IIM-C) revoked confirmed admissions offers, it is the turn of Management Development Institute, Gurgaon (MDI) to encounter irregularities in its admissions results.
The institute released a list of provisional admissions for the 2009-11 Post Graduate Program in Management (PGPM) earlier today which had mismatches between CAT registration numbers and names listed. What does this mean? A student called Rohan Mehra with a CAT registration number of 45678 would have seen the registration number of 45678 in the results but with another person's name. The institute has currently withdrawn the list of provisional admissions from its official website.

| IITian chooses factory over IIM |
| |
KOLKATA: While IIT engineers are once again lining up for CAT interviews at the IIMs, the probable state topper in this year's CAT says he likes
the sweat and grime of factories better. In all probability, Chaitanya Tambay of IIT Kharagpur would join an ITC factory, though he has already received interview calls from all the six IIMs.
The Nagpur boy has just completed four gruelling years at IIT Kharagpur and feels all this hard work should not go down the drain as an MBA degree would get him a job that would be far removed from his engineering experience. Chaitanya has always been a bright scholar at the mechanical engineering department of IIT Kharagpur and has just bagged a job at ITC through campus placement and is looking forward to joining them soon.

New Delhi: Even as the premier Indian Institutes of Management (IIM) debate contracting out their common admission test (CAT), a state university in Tamil Nadu has gone ahead and outsourced its examinations.
A first for higher education in India, the move aims at reducing operational costs and avoid the all too frequent testing and evaluating errors of manually conducted examinations that can hurt students' careers.
Examinations at the Anna University in Coimbatore are now being conducted by a computerized integrated examination management system (IEMS) that was launched on 15 December, and has since been used to conduct semester examinations for 32,000 students in 107 engineering and management colleges.

MUMBAI: MBA aspirants hoping to bell the CAT (Common Admission Test) later this month need not despair if they fail to make it to the Indian
Institutes of Management (IIMs). Chances are they will be taught by an IIM professor even if they are not studying in an IIM.
Top professors at India's best B-schools are often acting as visiting faculty in other management institutions where they give lectures, and sometimes even teach an entire course. For B-schools, this is a stop-gap solution to the acute faculty crunch staring them in the face, with industry pay-scales more lucrative than those offered by academics.

Recommending a corporate structure, the IIM review committee headed by R C Bhargava, chairman, Maruti Suzuki India Limited, has said "where possible, outsourcing possibilities should be seriously considered. Common systems and processes should be developed for the six new IIMs. Since some degree of modernisation is also required in these areas in the old IIMs, they too could benefit from the development work."

Finance no longer a buzzword in B Schools |
|
| |
|
|
| |
CHENNAI: As banks and financial institutions across US and Europe continue to collapse like nine pins, finance is no longer the buzz word in B-school campuses. At the Indian School of Busines (ISB), Hyderabad, new sectors like healthcare and retail are becoming a big draw amongst students. "Many students from our institute go for a major career shift on completion of the course," says Bhuvana Ramalingam, senior director, communications, ISB.
Ramalingam says that students are exploring opportunities in other sunrise sectors such as pharma and retail. "In any case, companies like Goldman Sachs and Lehman Brothers were never big recruiters from our campus even in the past," adds Ramalingam. Nevertheless, the ongoing financial crisis has ensured that a career in finance is not longer bankable. As Anuradha Venkatesan, a freshman who is pursuing MBA at IIT Madras puts it candidly, "Many of us were looking at finance as an option, but the current market scenario has lowered our hopes."

Strict screening of CAT forms may lead to more rejections |
|
| |
|
|
| |
AHMEDABAD: It's considered to be the toughest entrance test for any B-school across the world. Now, it's about to gain a distinction for being tough on the applicants too, right at the screening stage itself. That's the new avatar of CAT for wannabe honchos.
While the number of CAT applicants has gone up by a record number, from 2.30 lakh in 2007 to close to 3 lakh in 2008, the number of rejections too are set to be higher this year, thanks to a stringent admission procedure. Unlike before, this year applications are being rejected without notice. Usually, forms are rejected when applicants fail to attach relevant documents along with the application form.

|
| |
|
|
| |
The rat race to bell the CAT will only get tougher this year. The Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) have sold a record 2.9 lakh forms for the Common Admission Test (CAT) to be held on November 16 across 23 cites this year.
Despite a hike in the CAT application fee, the sales figures have surged by 50,000from 2.4 lakh to 2.9 lakh forms this year. Of this, 2.73 lakh candidates have submitted forms to the seven IIMs to crack the three-hour test. Last year, IIMs sold 2.4 lakh CAT forms but only 2.09 lakh candidates appeared for the test.

CAT scores will now be available through SMS, email |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Ahmedabad (PTI): Scores of the Common Entrance Test (CAT) conducted by Indian Institute of Managements (IIMs) will now be available through SMS and email.
"Getting CAT scores through SMS and email is an option introduced by us to decrease the pressure on our website where the results are available online," Head of the IIM-Ahmedabad examination committee Satish Deodhar said on Thursday.
"When the CAT results are announced, lakhs of candidates log on to the IIM website to know the results. This puts a lot of load on the website," Deodhar said.
"So, we have decided to introduce the service that would allow the candidates to know their scores by sending an SMS or putting up a request through email. We have mentioned these options in this year's CAT information bulletin itself," he said.

Chances of IIM seat get slimmer |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Only one out of every 175 students who take the Common Admission Test will make it to the Indian Institutes of Management this year. The logic, note experts, is simple. Around 300,000 students are slated to appear for CAT this November.
Only 4,000 to 5,000 get an interview call going by the last few years' data. However, there are only 1,700 seats (last year, it was 1,500) for the next two-year management programme (2009-11), which warrants further elimination.
Despite such slim chances, industry players believe more students will try to crack CAT as the job situation is not at its best. The increase in the number of students taking the CAT exam this year will be around 20 per cent over last year when an estimated 250,000 students appeared for the exam.
"We believe more students will appear for CAT this year considering the slowdown and the fact that jobs will be at a premium. We had seen a similar situation in 2001, when there was an almost 100 per cent jump in the number of students appearing for CAT," said Shiv Kumar, director, Career Launcher, an MBA test-preparing institute.

International exposure and the opportunity to learn things not usually
taught
in a single institute make double degrees valuable.
A management degree is no more complete with the stamp of just one good
Indian or international college on it. With recruiters preferring students with
diverse education profile, quite a few institutes are offering dual-degree or
double-degree programmes in collaboration with foreign institutes.
The programmes allow the student to complete the first year in India and
the second year at a foreign institute.

Indian School of Business has been ranked 20th amongst the top B-schools

"We wish to see many more Indian B-schools follow the trend and reach

He further added, While the average student experience at ISB is 5 years,
the IIMs have students with a lesser experience, as such, the two are

Petroleum universities on a boom |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Oil firms have joined hands with the government to set up petroleum
universities,. These would cater to the growing demand for specialised
engineers and managers for the sector.
The recently launched Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University (PDPU) at
Gandhinagar, is promoted by the Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation.
The university is supported by Mr. Mukesh Ambani. Ambani has promised
to help it become the worlds top university soon.
The University of Petroleum and Energy Studies, Dehradun, has CMDs
and MDs of companies such as Hindustan Petroleum, Bharat Petroleum
Corp, Indian Oil Corp and Petronet LNG on its governing council.
From next year onwards, we might see around 600-700 students armed
with bachelor and master degrees in engineering and management
studies in major oil companies in India.
The oil companies have been facing a steady shortage of qualified
personnel at higher levels. In a recent study conducted by Pricewaterhouse
Coopers for Petrofed, the gap between the availability and requirement
of trained manpower in India is projected to be about 36,000 by 2019,
and the existing institutes may not be adequate to meet the increasing
requirement of technical manpower in the petroleum sector.

Leading business schools like the IIMs,
Indian School of Business (ISB), SP Jain, Institute of Management
Technology(IMT) and others are recognizing the plausibility of 'subtle
marketing' for their post graduate programmes in management.
IIM-A had held road shows to market the programme in UAE and China
for its PGPX program. It also took up Internet marketing considering
that for most people abroad web serves as the first information
source. Besides contacting media representatives abroad IIM-A also
made separate brochures for the overseas students.
Similarly, the Indian School of Business
(ISB) Hyderabad, participates in a World MBA tour to the US and
UK. In its 'Inside India' programme students from foreign universities
are invited to the Hyderabad campus.
Their aim is to create a brand. “Otherwise why do people want
to go to universities like Harvard?,” asks Arvind Sahay, Chairperson
of PGPX at IIM-A.

Rural mid-day meal for Harvard students |
|
| |
|
|
| |
The mid-day meal programme of rural India
would be taught as a time management case study at the The Harvard Business
School (HBS).
A team that last year visited India carried out a field study on the programme.
They said that the time management in the mid-day meal programme can be
observed from preparation of meals to collecting the vessels.
The team studied the mid-day meal scheme in urban centers of India. There
were centralized kitchens and the food was distributed within a few hours. “Any
delay at any level can disrupt the entire chain and can lead to chaos.
It is because of this precise time management that the scheme is running
so well in Indian cities,” said Ellis, a student of the business
school.
In Bangalore, once the food is ready, the food is distributed to approximately
3,000 government schools within two hours. Each van is assigned certain
schools for the distribution of food.
Chanchalapathi Das, vice-chairperson of Akshaya Patra, the NGO that runs
the scheme in Bangalore says, "The vans deliver the meal in each school
and then waits at the last school for children to finish the meal. On its
way back, it collects the empty vessels.”

IIM-Bangalore announces selection criteria for 2007 |
|
| |
|
|
| |
IIM-B has revealed the process used for selecting
candidates for its 2007-09 PGP batch. In a document
available on the institute's website, it was also announced that the
process followed for 2008 - 2010 will be roughly similar.
According to the information released by the institute, the first shortlist
of candidates was based on candidates scoring the minimum section-wise
cut-offs. All other criteria were only taken into consideration once the
candidates had cleared the cut-offs.
For example, for General category candidates, the cut-off for each section
was 85%, while the overall cut-off was 90%.
While the document itself may look complicated, the main point for CAT
2007 aspirants is that they shouldn't worry too much about the selection
criteria. Just focus on cracking CAT and clearning the minimum cut-off
by a comfortable margin.
