MICAT 2017 Exam Analysis



Mudra Institute of Communications, Ahmedabad conducted its Entrance Exam - MICAT - for admission to its 2 Year Post Graduate Diploma in Management Communications on 11th December 2016. Since 2015 MICAT is conducted online. The test comprised 3 sections: Descriptive, Psychometric, and Subject based.

MICAT Section I (Descriptive) Analysis

This section had four questions. The questions were descriptive in nature. This section tested the creative writing skills of the test-takers. The total time given for attempting these questions was 35 minutes.

The first three questions were based on the topic: ‘Expert Opinion' is critical on Geo-Political developments.

The first question asked 3 arguments FOR the topic. The second Question asked 3 arguments AGAINST the topic. The third question asked to present views in about 200 words in response to a request from a leading newspaper editor. The fourth question comprised 4 images, where a test taker had to frame a story around the pictures and the pictures had to be sequenced as per the writer’s storyline.

MICAT Section 2 (Psychometric Test) Analysis

The psychometric test had no negative marking. It was compulsory to attempt all the questions in this part. The instruction sheet clearly said that failure to attempt all the questions in this part would lead to disqualification.

The first set of MCQs asked which of the following three choices describe your behavior in the best way. The second set of questions had 6 statements each, where these statements had to be ordered according to the test takers priorities.  There were total 36 questions in this section.

MICAT Section 3

Section 3 tested 4 sub-sections: Reasoning, General Knowledge, Verbal Ability, and Quantitative Ability. The total time allocated for Section 3 was 1 hour and 45 minutes. A test taker could navigate through the 4 subsections as per his need. The test automatically gets submitted once the time is over.

MICAT Section 3-Part A (Reasoning) Analysis

Part A had 30 questions. The penalty for incorrect answers was 25% of the marks allotted to the question. The Verbal Reasoning questions were little tricky in the Word Association questions. It took a little more time than usual to solve them. However, the Statement-Assumption questions were too obvious to guess.

MICAT Section 3-Part B (General Knowledge) Analysis

Part B had 25 questions. The penalty for incorrect answers was 25% of the marks allotted to the question. A lot of questions related to current affairs (Brexit, LinkedIn takeover, etc.) were asked. Most of the questions were from Business and Economics. There were no questions on Abbreviations and History like the last time. There were questions on Companies and their respective Owners.

MICAT Section 3-Part C (Verbal Ability) Analysis

Part C had 25 questions. The penalty for incorrect answers was 25% of the marks allotted to the question.

The Verbal Ability questions were quite easy. The Grammar concepts tested were: Pronouns, Tenses and Articles of the basic to intermediate level. The vocabulary questions were also easy to answer. Out of 5 questions 3 were quite easy (heterogeneous, everlasting, and wary/vary) and 2 were moderately difficult (truculent, disheveled).

The Reading Comprehension passage was an easy-read with 5 fact-based questions. 3 questions were easy guesses and 2 were of moderate difficulty level.
