ATMA - February 2014 (Offline) – Exam Analysis

The Association of Indian Management Schools (AIMS) conducted its Entrance Exam for management admissions – ATMA on 16th February, 2014. There were 3 sections in the paper and each section was divided into two parts – Part A and Part B. The total number of questions in the paper was 180 and each section comprised 60 questions. Each question was followed with 4 options. Each correct answer was awarded 1 mark whereas the penalty for every incorrect answer was 0.25 marks. The duration of the test was 180 minutes.

The pattern of the test was as follows:

Quantitative Skills - Part A

This part saw 15 to 18 questions on Arithmetic based on Percentage, Profit and Loss, Time-Speed-Distance and Time and Work. There were 5-6 questions on Number System and two sets of Data Interpretation based questions. Each set had two questions; the answer to one of the question was not present in the options.

Quantitative Skills - Part B

This part was dominated by Data Interpretation but these were single questions instead of sets. There was 1 Pie Chart and 1 Bar Graph. DI was largely calculation intensive and time consuming. In Arithmetic, there were 10-11 questions based on Simple Interest/
Compound Interest, Time-Speed-Distance, Time and Work, Profit and Loss and Percentage. There were 3 questions on Numbers, 2 on Algebra and 2 on Series. The overall level of difficulty of this part was comparatively lower than that of Part A.

Analytical Reasoning Skills - Part A
This section was of moderate level of difficulty. There were 5-6 Odd One Out questions that were based on the positioning and arrangement of letters. These questions were moderate to tough in difficulty and were time consuming too. There were 4 questions based on Coding-Decoding, 5 questions on Blood Relations and 4 questions on Visual Reasoning. This part also saw questions on Verbal Logic. These questions included 3 questions on Analogy and 3 questions on Syllogisms.

Analytical Reasoning Skills - Part B
This section was dominated by AR sets that covered approximately 10-12 questions. The sets were based on comparison. Each set comprised 1-2 questions. This part also had 4- 5 questions based on Data Sufficiency, 2 questions on Statement– Conclusion and 1 question on Number Series. The correct answer for two of the Data Sufficiency questions was not present in the options. The Verbal Logic questions in this section included 4 questions on Analogy, 3 on Syllogism and one odd one out question. These questions were of moderate difficulty level.

Verbal Skills - Part A
This section was dominated by Vocabulary and Reading Comprehension. In vocabulary, there were 15 questions of Fill in the Blanks and 2 questions on Synonyms. The fill in the blank questions were fairly easy while the level of difficulty of synonyms was moderate. There were three Reading Comprehension passages with each passage followed by 2 questions. The first passage dealt with cultural unity in India and the reasons behind it, the second was based on the rising prices of essential goods in India. The third passage dealt with how various external factors were responsible for unemployment of people and for the prevailing family system during the Great Depression. The passages were of moderate difficulty level. There were seven questions in which the grammatically correct statement was to be selected. The level of difficulty for these questions varied from easy to moderate.

Verbal Skills - Part B

The pattern of Part B was more or less on the same lines as Part A. This part had 14 questions of Fill in the Blanks and 6 questions on Synonyms. These questions were mostly easy. There were also 16 questions of Grammar in which the grammatically correct statement was to be selected from the given 4 options. Most of these questions were easy while 2-3 questions were of moderate difficulty level.
