The paper based Management Aptitude Test (MAT) was conducted on 2nd of February, 2014 in a single slot between 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The pattern of the test has not undergone any major change.
The pattern of the test was as follows:
Intelligence and Critical Reasoning
This section was the easiest of the lot. Mathematical Reasoning dominated the section. There were around 26 questions based on it. Verbal Reasoning comprised questions on Analogy, Cause and Effect, Assertion and Reason and Statement Conclusion. A student could have easily attempted over 30 questions in this section.
The details of the section are given below:
Indian and Global Environment
The section was dominated by questions from Current G.K. The level of the questions was easy to moderate. Regular reading of the newspaper could have helped one attempt at least 25 out of 40 questions with ease. The questions were from areas like Business Awareness, Politics, Sports, Books and Authors etc.
Mathematical Skills
This section comprised questions from varied topics like Arithmetic, Number System, Geometry and Mensuration and Probability. Majority of the questions were from Arithmetic. These included questions from Ratio, Profit & Loss, Averages, Time-Speed-Distance, Time & Work, Partnerships and Percentages. At least three questions in this section were ambiguous. An attempt of 33 questions can be considered as a good attempt.
The details of the section are as below:
Data Analysis and Sufficiency
This was the most difficult section of the paper and questions in this section were calculation intensive and time consuming. An attempt of 20 questions can be considered a good attempt.
Detailed break-up of the section is as follows:
Language Comprehension
The section was dominated by questions on Reading Comprehension and Vocabulary. There were five reading comprehension passages of about 500-600 words. Each passage had four questions each. Three of these passages were descriptive/factual in nature while the other two were inference based. The text of the inference based passages was abstract and hence required careful reading. In Vocabulary, there were three questions each on Antonyms, Fill in the Blanks and Odd Word Out. In antonyms and odd word out questions, the words were given in jumbled form which had to be first rearranged before arriving at the correct antonym or the odd word. This made these questions a little time consuming. There were four questions each on Summary and Para Jumbles. In Grammar, there were three questions on Sentence Correction. Overall, the section was of moderate level of difficulty but a bit lengthy; given the number of reading comprehension passages. An attempt of 25-30 questions can be considered a good attempt.
The details of the section are as below:
Overall, the paper was moderately difficult and an attempt of 120 to 140 questions can be considered a good attempt.
