The B-School Of Your Choice
Dear Aspirant,
Congratulations on making it this far! The best situation any cricket
team captain can have is one in which he can pick from an abundance
of classy players. Wouldn't you love to choose who to pick and who
to leave out from the side amongst players as good as McGrath, Gillespie
and Brett Lee?
In an effort to simplify this process, we have categorized India's
Best Business schools into 8 clusters. Please note that as you proceed
from the best to the also-rans, the level of differentiation between
both the schools and the clusters significantly diminishes.
When reviewing B-schools within a cluster, the preference generally
diminishes as you read further from left to right. For e.g. in Cluster
1, we feel that IIM-A is the best B-school in India at present,
followed by Bangalore, Kolkata and so on. Also note that you are
best advised to study the write-up at the end of each cluster to
get an accurate picture. In certain clusters, the differentiation
on the quality of the institute is specialization-driven, and the
left to right reading is not necessarily representative.
Before taking final admission into any of these B-schools, please
ensure that you speak to some students of the current batch of the
institutes you have got calls from.
Cluster 1
IIM-A, IIM-B, IIM-C, IIM-L, XLRI, TISS, ISB
Cluster 2
IIM-I, IIM-K, FMS, SP Jain, MDI, NITIE, IIFT,
JBIMS, IRMA, MDI (HR), FMS (MS), IIM-L (ABM)
Cluster 3
IIT-B, IIT-D, MICA, NMIMS, IMT, SCMHRD, SIBM,
TAPMI, XIM, GIM
Cluster 4
IMI, UBS, IISc, IIT Kgp, IIT K, Sydenham,
Welingkar, Somaiya, ICFAI Hyderabad, IIT Madras, IIFM
Cluster 5
IIT Roorkee, FORE, SIOM, MFC, MBE, ICFAI Mumbai,
SIES, BIM, LIBA, MET, IES, SIIB, AMITY, NIRMA
Cluster 6
SIMS, ICFAI Gurgaon, IISWBM, Chetana, N L
Dalmiya, XISS, MIB, MHROD, SIMC
Cluster 7
BIM Tech, LBS, SRCC GBO, ABA, ITM, FMS BHU,
NIMC, XIME
Cluster 8
NDIM, IILM, JIMS, GBS, APIM, EMPI
Cluster 1
IIM-A, IIM-B, IIM-C, IIM-L, XLRI, TISS, ISB
In this cluster, it's IIM Ahmedabad all the way. Your specialization
and geographical preference don't matter at all, unless you have received
admission calls from Harvard or Wharton.
The differentiation between IIM - B and IIM - C is not significant,
though based on the track record of the last 8-10 years, IIM-B is
more popular among the student community. IIM Lucknow is a definite
fourth in this category, and is currently not in the same league
as the Big 3.
XLRI is best known for its specialization in Personnel Management
(PM) & Industrial Relations (IR), which is the best in its field
in the country today. Students interested in this discipline should
definitely opt for XLRI. The general management course (BMD) is
also quite good and merits a place in the top bracket. TISS also
offers a specialization in PM & IR which is almost at par with
XLRI. The TISS course is, however, not an MBA, but an MA. But this
differentiation does not lead to a marked difference in your career.
IIM-A's Agri Business Management (ABM) course is also the best
in the country, but it is recommended that you do not join this
course just to secure admission into IIM-A. You should look forward
to a career in that specific field.
ISB is the new kid on the block; it offers only a 1-yr course which
is highly respected both by the academia and industry and has helped
ISB to secure its place in Cluster 1. Watch out for this institute
climbing up the ratings in the years ahead.
Cluster 2
IIM-I, IIM-K, FMS, SP Jain, MDI, NITIE, IIFT,
JBIMS, IRMA, MDI (HR), IIM-L ABM, FMS (MS)
You should consider the above cluster if and only if you do not receive
calls from Cluster 1. IIM-I & K are the two youngest IIMs and
occupy the first couple of slots in this category primarily because
of the IIM tag. Indore & Kozhikode also lag behind their more
prestigious cousins mainly because they are not located in a metro.
In spite of this, both have excellent faculty and infrastructure and
must be preferred to Delhi & Mumbai based schools.
FMS, which has been around since 1954, is the oldest surviving top
B-school in the country and benefits immensely from the alumni base
it has built over the years. This institute still carries the DU (Delhi
University) tag that seems to inhibit its progress. In terms of value
for money, FMS is perhaps the best in its category. The new course
launched by FMS at the South Campus of Delhi University is still a
very young course and hence ranked at the end of this cluster. It
caters to the ever-growing demands of the service sector and is expected
to do very well in the times to come. The faculty for this course
hails from the main FMS branch and though placements are not conducted
simultaneously, this group will not be left behind, mainly due to
the FMS brand name. The campus is Wi-Fi enabled and also offers hostel
facility to its students.
SP Jain, MDI & NITIE belong practically to one sub-group. The two
Mumbai-based institutes (SPJIMR & NITIE) have a slight edge over
MDI in terms of placements at present, but are likely to lose that
advantage as Gurgaon grows as a corporate hub. NITIE is distinctly
the best in the category of Systems & Operations, with SP Jain
ahead of the other two in Marketing & Finance. SP Jain insists
on students selecting their specializations before they join hence
those who prefer to test the waters may well opt for MDI. MDI's HR
program is doing very well already and is expected to help the institute
climb up the B-school ladder.
IIFT, which offers a specialization in Foreign Trade, is the best
course of its kind in India. It also offers specializations in Marketing
& Finance that are quite popular among recruiters. IIFT should
not be given preference over any other institute purely from a foreign
placement perspective, it is important to note that placements is
a student-run program in all B-schools and it is possible to get good
foreign placements in any other B-school as well.
Bajaj is again one of the better institutes for a general MBA program.
Its location in Mumbai is a major advantage as it ensures good placements
for students. Its exam is conducted through CET, which is held normally
at the end of the B-school calendar. This is a concern, as you may
need to commit yourself to other institutes before its results are
declared.
IRMA, like IIFT, is the best institute in its bracket for Rural
Management (RM). It is highly recommended that you join this institute
only if you have a genuine interest in RM and not because you are
almost guaranteed a job at the end of two years. IIM Lucknow also
offers a course in Agri Business Management. This course was launched
quite recently and is expected to challenge the course at IIM Ahmedabad
for top spot sometime in the near future.
Cluster 3
IIT-B, IIT-D, MICA, NMIMS, IMT, SCMHRD, SIBM,
TAPMI, XIM, GIM
IIT Mumbai & Delhi head this group with both institutes benefiting
greatly from their location and small batch sizes in comparison to
most other institutes mentioned above. Greater individual attention
and excellent placements are positive fallouts of the small batch
size.
MICA is an excellent institute for those interested in Marketing
Communication. It is crucial however to note that the 2 year course
is not a course in Copywriting and must not be taken as a passport
to the creative side of advertising.
NMIMS, IMT, SCMHRD & SIBM are all pretty much in the same league
and the major differentiator is placements predominantly influenced
by location. In terms of quality of teaching and infrastructure,
there's not much to choose among them. Mumbai-based NM also edges
out the others on industry interaction. SCMHRD is popular among students
and recruiters for its HR specialization. Contrary
to popular belief SCMHRD does offer specializations in other fields,
such as Marketing and Operations Management. Its Marketing faculty
is quite good and is favored over that of SIBM.
TAPMI, XIM & GIM lose out to all the rest in this cluster in
terms of its location. Apart from placements, this also tends to
affect the quality of industry interaction and the number of resident
and visiting faculty at each of these institutes.
Cluster 4
IMI, UBS, IISc, IIT Kgp, IIT K, Sydenham,
Welingkar, Somaiya, ICFAI Hyderabad, IIT Madras, IIFM
Delhi-based IMI is miles ahead of other institutes in this category.
IMI has had encouraging placements during the past few seasons and
is also growing in terms of the number of students going for exchange
programs. The number of live projects done by students on campus is
significantly high and the industry interface of this institute is
also quite good.
UBS, like FMS, is an excellent value for money option. Though being
a good low-cost option, this program suffers a bit in terms of location
from the corporate world perspective, but placements generally don't
suffer as much, because of its proximity to Delhi.
IISc, IIT Kharagpur & IIT Kanpur rely on JMET as the qualifying
test and though the IIT brand name helps, the peer level interaction
is quite limited because of a consistency in the student profile
(all engineers). However, small batch sizes ensure a decent placement
track record. IIT Madras slips in at the end of this group.
Sydenham is the best of the Mumbai institutes in this category,
with Welingkar shooting its way up the ranking ladder. Welingkar,
backed by a visionary team, will probably break into Cluster 3 in
a few years' time. It has a fantastic campus and some exciting exchange
programs for its students. K J Somaiya has slipped down the rankings over the last few years and has lost its place among Mumbai's top 5 B-schools, but is still fairly well respected amongst the recruiting fraternity.
ICFAI Hyderabad is the best of the ICFAI group of institutes. This
institute is highly recommended for those interested in pursuing
a course in finance. The institute struggles a bit in placing its
batch, the size of which is considerably higher as compared to most
B-schools.
IIFM offers a specialized course and once again should be pursued
only by people with a genuine interest in this discipline. It would
be better to drop a year and take another shot at a B-school than
join this course if it is not something you are passionate about.
Cluster 5
IIT Roorkee, FORE, SIOM, MFC, MBE, ICFAI Mumbai,
SIES, BIM, LIBA, MET, IES, SIIB, AMITY, NIRMA
IIT Roorkee is the latest IIT and its MBA program, too, has benefited
because of its brand. FORE is an upcoming institute and benefits from
its being in the 'Qutab hub' where a number of other B-schools are
present.
SIOM, previously known as SCMHRD Nasik, is now an independent institute but still
carries the Symbiosis name. SIOM is exclusively for specialization
in Operations Management.
Both MFC and MBE are courses offered by Delhi University
and are decent 'value for money' deals. The Business Economics course
is also a good option for those interested in Economics - they can
expect more in this field than what is taught in a normal MBA. ICFAI
Mumbai definitely benefits from its location and is expected to do
well over the years. SIES, MET & IES are some good options available
to students through the CET who want to do an MBA in Mumbai. BIM and
LIBA are both good institutes and are popular among students in their
respective cities.
SIIB is the second best option for International Business in India,
though it is a distant second. The Symbi tag helps this institute
creep into Cluster 5.
Amity with its huge advertising budget has started getting a much
better student base and has hence improved in quality quite substantially.
This institute has a huge batch size because of the number of courses
it offers and hence struggles to place all of its students.
NIRMA is a good institute and benefits significantly from visiting
faculty both from IIM-A and MICA. It is possibly the best of the
last resort options for those who have no other option but to do
an MBA in the current year.
Cluster 6
SIMS, ICFAI Gurgaon, IISWBM, Chetana, N L
Dalmiya, XISS, MIB, MHROD, SIMC
Cluster 7
BIM Tech, LBS, SRCC GBO, ABA, ITM, FMS BHU,
NIMC, XIME
Cluster 8
NDIM, IILM, JIMS, GBS, APIM, EMPI
The institutes listed in Clusters 6 - 8 are only recommended to students
if they must do an MBA this year. There are more than a 1000 more institutes offering MBAs in India that do not even make this list and it is highly recommended you think twice before joining them.
