TISSNET 2017-19

Tata Institute of Social Sciences National Entrance Test 2017-2019 Analysis

TISSNET 2017-2019 was successfully conducted on January 7, 2017. Like last year, this year’s format was computer based and there was no negative marking.

The test comprised 100 questions. This year there were six sections i.e. General Awareness (40 Questions), Logical Reasoning (15 questions), Mathematics (7 questions), Data Interpretation (8 questions), Verbal Ability (25 questions), and Reading Comprehension (5 questions). However, there is no sectional cut-off. Hence, effectively, the paper pattern remained the same. Each correct answer carried 1 mark.

This year threw no surprise. General Awareness became much easier as compared to last year. Most of the questions were from current affairs and international news. The DI section was slightly time consuming. However, one could have easily attempted all questions with 15 minutes to spare. The paper was surely an easy one.

The section-wise analysis of the test is as follows:

General Awareness

It was still the toughest of the three as GK is never a favourite of students. However, most of the questions came from current affairs. The questions were primarily related to socio-political issues. Hence, a student should have attempted all the questions with a 70% accuracy. A score of 27-30 out of 40 will be ideal for this section.

Logical Reasoning, Mathematics, and Data Interpretation:

The heading mentioned three separate sections. However, as there is no sectional cut-off, we need to look at these together. It had total 30 questions with 14 analytical reasoning, 1 verbal logic, 7 from Mathematics, and 8 from Data Interpretation. The verbal logic question was tricky. Other questions were easy-moderate in their difficulty level.  The other LR questions were primarily from mathematical puzzles and sequence. The puzzles were lengthy as one had to do multiple calculations to answer only one question.

Out of the seven Mathematics questions, arithmetic dominated. The questions were easy-moderate in nature. Anyone with a strong fundamental knowledge would have done well in this section.

The DI section was dominated by graphs and pie chart. It was calculation extensive. However, the law of approximation would have helped students in eliminating options as they were not very close.

A score of 25-27 is a good score in this section.

Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension:

This section was a sitter. It had 25 questions. Like last year, vocabulary dominated the section. The words were commonly used terms. The idioms this year were much easier compared to that of last year. The grammar questions mostly dealt with common confusables. Even the odd one out questions were easy. There were questions on synonym, antonym, one word substitution, idioms, and proverbs. A student can expect to score 20-22 in this section.

Just like last year, there was just one passage with five questions. It was an extremely easy passage with all factual questions. The options were easy to eliminate. Hence, a student should have got all the five questions correct in this section.

A topic wise division of the section is as follows:

The overall cut-off is mostly likely to go up by at least five marks this year. For general candidates it can hover around 79-81. For SC/ST candidates, the same is estimated to be around 70-72 marks.
