Symbiosis Entrance Test
  • Following SNAP in December, now SET too is to be conducted online
  • The change in format calls for a change in test-taking strategy and approach
  • SET Mock by LST scheduled on 25th May will be online

The Symbiosis Entrance Test (SET), which is conducted for admissions into the various UG programs of the Symbiosis International University, is about to witness a major transformation this year. SIU has decided to do away with the conventional paper-pencil approach, and opt for an online format. It is quite likely that the change in format is the reason there was an almost a month’s delay this year in the announcement of SET.

The announcement should not come as a surprise because in December 2017, SNAP, the entrance exam for SIU’s PG programs, was conducted online.

What it means for SET aspirants: Writing a test online, as opposed to using paper and pencil, requires a change in strategy; and, more importantly, a shift in approach. Sitting in front of a computer for 150 minutes is going to be a tiring experience for many, if not for all. However, those who will be writing SLAT (Symbiosis Law Admission Test, the new name for SET-Law) will find it less challenging, as they are used to writing CLAT Mocks online. But the online avatar of SET will definitely be a new experience for aspirants of other programs, like BBA, BCA, Liberal Arts, Economics, etc. They will need to quickly adapt to the change, as they might not have enough time in hand after their Board exams.

What needs to be done: Students targeting SET 2018 must start building their appetite for long sittings in front of the computer. At the same time, SET was never a complex, or difficult, exam; and quite possibly, will stick to being the same even when the format has changed. So, as far as the fundamentals for cracking the exam are concerned, they remain the same. The impact is largely on reading speed, which sees a drop when a screen is involved; more so for those who are not used to reading online. Thus, the focus must be on reading from a computer screen; which, for CL students, is available when using the SIS/myLST platform. More time should be devoted to Test Gym; and practising online more often. Reading e-papers, solving topic and section tests will also come in handy.

What’s in store for CL Students: Nothing changes for you, though! You have already been working online on SIS/myLST, accessing Test Gym, reading our newsletters, etc. If there is any variation, it is simply that all your SET Mocks will now immediately move to an online platform. We are happy to announce our next SET mock scheduled on 25th January, will also be conducted in online mode.

So, keep your practice momentum up and running.
