The CAT result is out, and whether your score feels “good,” “average,” or disappointing, the reality is simple: what’s done can’t be changed.  There’s no value in stressing over spilled milk. The smart move now is to analyse your result calmly and interpret what it means. Hence, your next focus would be to understand the next step after CAT results and plan strategically because the admission season is not yet over, and the real selection process is just beginning.

CAT Result 2025: The Big Picture

Many students assume that CAT success means only admission to IIM Ahmedabad or nothing. But that’s not how MBA admissions work. Every year, students gain admission in strong colleges across a wide percentile range, including 98, 96, 93, 89, and beyond, because not everyone targets the same institute, and not everyone needs ABC to build a great career. The key is to focus on what your result enables for you, based on your profile and goals.

Why CAT Is Only a Screening Test

The CAT exam is designed primarily as a screening test, not a final selection criterion. While a good CAT percentile is essential to get shortlisted by IIMs and top B-schools, it does not guarantee admission. CAT scores are used only to shortlist candidates for the next stages of selection, which include GD, WAT, Personal Interview, academic performance, work experience, and profile evaluation.

Many students with average percentiles successfully convert to top institutes due to strong interviews and well-rounded profiles, while others with very high scores fail to make the cut.

What Colleges You Can Expect at Different Percentiles

The colleges you can target after CAT depend on your overall percentile, sectional scores, academic background, and work experience. Generally, candidates scoring 98–99+ percentile can expect calls from top IIMs like ABC, FMS, and XLRI (through XAT). Those in the 95–97 percentile range can target IIMs like L, I, K, SPJIMR, MDI, and IITs.

Candidates scoring 90–94 percentile still have excellent opportunities with new IIMs, IMT, IMI, GIM, TAPMI, and other reputed B-schools. Even students with 85–90 percentiles can convert to good colleges if they have a strong profile and perform well in interviews. The key is to shortlist wisely and apply strategically based on realistic chances.

How to Interpret CAT Results: Percentile vs Reality

Most candidates already had a rough idea of their score and projected percentile; the result is simply a confirmation. A few students may see a slight variation, especially those on the borderlines. The important part now is how your sectional performance affects your options. So don’t judge your result only by the overall percentile; look at the section-wise story too.

CAT Score vs Percentile Insight: What the Data Suggested

CAT score-to-percentile discusses trends and compares them with previous years. It was noted that CAT wasn’t “unfairly difficult,” but it was lengthy, and speed mattered. Students’ immediate post-exam reactions can be emotional, but the final score-percentile outcome gives the real picture.

The Most Important Next Step: Interviews (Selection Starts Now)

MBA entrance exams like CAT, SNAP, NMAT, XAT are screening tests, and the real selection starts with interviews. Candidates are strongly advised to begin WAT–PI preparation immediately, not after XAT, because once XAT is over, you may have only 15–20 days before interview schedules start, which is too short if you begin late. It is significant to put your utmost efforts into preparing yourself for the second stage of the IIM admission process because this stage is, after all, the deciding factor.

What After CAT Result: One Done, More to go…

CAT may be over, but the race to the finale is still going on. The discussion in the session highlights that many exams are still relevant as options or backups, including:

  • MAH CET is a big opportunity
  • CMAT as a backup exam
If your CAT performance didn’t go as expected, these become important routes to still land a strong B-school.

Use Predictors Smartly: B-School Predictor + B-School Advisory

If you’re confused about which forms to fill out and where calls can come from, don’t worry, because we are here to guide you step-by-step:

  • CL B-School Predictor (live) to estimate shortlist chances
  • B-School Advisory/rankings to build a broader college list beyond top options

Expert Tip: Make a list of colleges suitable for your percentile, check which forms you’ve already filled out, which are still open, and track deadlines in an Excel sheet or notebook.

Don’t Assume Anything: Even a 99.9+ Doesn’t Guarantee Conversion

It is significant to understand that high percentiles do not guarantee conversion. Even very high percentiles (including 100) have seen rejections from top institutes in some cases, while some candidates near cutoffs have converted. The reason is simple – PI/WAT and GD become the decisive factor to get the final call. The key point: treat interviews like a fresh innings starting from zero.

Profile Concerns: Does a Gap Year Matter?

Tackling gap anxiety: A gap is not automatically a rejection reason. Students with long gaps have been accepted into top IIMs, so candidates shouldn’t panic solely due to the gap duration.

Final Takeaway: Focus on What You Can Control

The CAT result is out, but the next phase involves applications, shortlists, and interviews. Don’t waste energy on regrets. Use your percentile smartly, fill the right forms on time, and start interview prep immediately. The screening is over, selection starts now.
