DU B.Com entrance exam 2018

News that Delhi University will conduct an entrance examination for admission to its Commerce courses has generated widespread cheer among the lakhs of students that sit for the Class XII board examination in 2017-18. B.Com, arguably the most prized target for students seeking admission in DU, will have an admission test for students looking to enter colleges like Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC), Lady Shri Ram College For Women (LSR), Hindu, Hansraj, Jesus & Mary College (JMC), etc.

While an official notification is yet to materialize on the Delhi University website, popular television channel Times Now quoted a statement released by the varsity saying, “Hereby informed to all aspirants who desire to take admission to University of Delhi B.Com/B.Com (Hons) for the session 2018-19 that the Admissions entry for the Candidates in said courses will only be made through B.Com Entrance Tests 2018.

“Previously there was a long trend for Admissions to 3 years (6 semesters) Bachelors of Commerce & Bachelors of Commerce (Hons) courses through 12th classes marks. As of now the Admission Coordinator of the University of Delhi after consulting the College principals decided to provide admission through All India Level basis Entrance test.”

Expert Speak

Career Launcher’s Vice Chairman and Managing Director, Mr. Gautam Puri, welcomed the announcement saying, “Delhi University has a long standing tradition of academic excellence, and their decision to introduce an admission test for B.Com courses is a step in the right direction. Ultimately the University’s job is to make the admission process a meritocracy, and with students achieving varied levels of success in different board exams, a common admission test evens the playing field for one and all. We laud the University for having taken this decision, and look forward to them offering a similar platform to students of other courses in the future.”

DU B.Com Entrance Exam Info

Information is still awaited whether Delhi University will keep the examination pattern similar to the JAT exam that the University conducts for admission to its BMS/BBA (FIA)/BBE courses or introduces a completely different screening mechanism for students aspiring to get into commerce courses.

The biggest advantage of using an aptitude based paper is that it is stream / background independent, offering a level playing field for all aspirants. With colleges allowing students from Humanities and Science backgrounds to apply for Commerce stream courses, it would seem unlikely that an Admission Test would include subjects taught to only commerce students in Class XI and XII like Accounts, Economics and Business Studies. However, the possibility cannot be completely ruled out, with these subjects potentially included in a supplementary section only for commerce students.

The most logical recourse for DU would be to make the JAT exam a common admission test for both courses, which will enable a significant ease of operations for Delhi University from a testing and evaluation perspective. Over and above this, ascribing a weightage to a student’s performance in the class XII board exams could help them normalize performance across streams.

DU B.Com Entrance Exam Centers

The entrance exam will be held at the national level and is expected to be immensely popular not just in Delhi, but also for students from the likes of Bangalore, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, etc. Traditionally, Delhi University has also been home to thousands of students from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and the North East, and students from these states are likely to jump at the opportunity to get admission into a prestigious college like SRCC in DU on the basis of their performance in an admission test rather than the outcome of their class XII board exams.

The entrance test is expected to cater to students who apply for both B.Com Honours and Pass courses, believed to be close to a third of all admissions into Delhi University at the under grad level. More than 11 lakh students are expected to appear for the CBSE Class XII board exams in 2018. In excess of a lakh of these applied for admission to B.Com programmes in 2017.

The entrance exam will in all probability take place between the end of May and mid June.
