Each question below is
followed by three arguments numbered (A), (B) and
(C). You have to decide which of the arguments is
‘strong’ and which is ‘weak’.
‘Strong’ arguments are those which are both important
and directly related to the question. ‘Weak’
arguments are those which are of minor importance
and also may not be directly related to the question
or may be related to a trivial aspect of the question.

6. Statement: Are the fare increases announced
in the recent railway budget justified?

Arguments:

(A) Yes, the quality of the trains and services
has improved, thus as a compromise, the
stated increase fares is completely
justified.

(B) No, a lot of poor people might suffer.

(C) Yes, the fares have not been hiked in a
long time, and thus to allow the new
modifications and to bring the ailing
railways into profit, the fare hike is justified.

  1. Only (A) is strong.
  2. Only (A) and (B) are strong.
  3. Only (A) and (C) are strong.
  4. Only (B) is strong.
  5. None of the above.

7. Statement: Should the e-ticket system be
promoted?

Arguments:
(A) Yes, the e-ticket system should be promoted, as it is fast,
cheap and environment friendly.
(B) Yes, it should be promoted as everybody has mobile phones.
(C) No, it should not be promoted as mobile messages might be
deleted easily.

  1. Only (A) is strong.
  2. Only (A) and (B) are strong.
  3. Only (A) and (C) are strong.
  4. Only (B) is strong.
  5. None of the above.

8. Statement: Should tobacco use be
abolished in India?

Arguments:
(A) No, because it might not directly affect wildlife.
(B) Yes, because it is a severe cause for cancer amongst its users
and also makes the air impure to breathe in.
(C) Yes, it is a public hazard and passive smoking becomes a
serious threat too, apart from other problems with smoking.

  1. Only (A) is strong.
  2. Only (B) and (C) are strong.
  3. Only (A) and (C) are strong.
  4. Only (B) is strong.
  5. None of the above.

9. Statement: Should the Kashmir issue be
hurried up and solved at once?

Arguments:
(A) No, it is an issue with many facets to it. Thus, it requires a
lot of deliberation and should not be hurried up at all.
(B) Yes, because a war might erupt any moment.
(C) Yes, because this experience with Pakistan is a cause to
worry.

  1. Only (A) is strong.
  2. Only (A) and (B) are strong.
  3. Only (A) and (C) are strong.
  4. Only (B) is strong.
  5. None of the above.

10. Statement: Should the Government focus on
establishing newer IIMs or try to improve the
existing ones?

Arguments:
(A) The government should create more IIMs because India’s
population is increasing.
(B) The existing IIMs have shown deterioration compared to
previous years, in terms of placements, the quality of students,
and professional efficiency. Hence, improvement should be the
focus.
(C) The IIMs require a lot of funding, hence the money should be
invested in improving the existing IIMs.

  1. Only (A) is strong.
  2. Only (A) and (B) are strong.
  3. Only (A) and (C) are strong.

6. 3 Only statements A and C strongly justifies
the increase
in fare. B gives a vague statement. (Notice the use of
the word ‘might’).

7. 1 Only statement A comes across as a strong
argument
with a valid reason. Statements B and C are weak
arguments for their reasons are vague and partially
complete.

8. 2 Statement A gives an argument which is not
a
conclusive proof of the result given. Statements B and
C give solid explanations and hence can be termed as
strong arguments.

9. 1 Only statement A has a good explanation
and thus
presents a good case unlike B and C, which provide
weak arguments.

10. 1 Statement A provides weak
reasoning. Statement C is
incorrect because we do not know about the nature
of problem of existing IIMs; whether they can be solved
by money alone. Only statement B provides an
argument with a strong justification.
