Despite Board Practical Exams, 9.65 lakh students register for January session of JEE Main

JEE 2019

The registrations for JEE Main 2019 has closed. Over 9.65 lakh students have registered for the JEE Main I exam even though the exam coincides with Class XII board practical exams. This exam is scheduled to be conducted between January 6-20, 2019.

Compared to last year, the number of registrations has decreased by almost 2.5 lakh. But, aspirants would get another chance this year for JEE to be conducted in the month of April.  Multiple exam dates, clash with board exams and change in the pattern of the exam from offline to online are the reasons behind the drop in the number of aspirants. It is expected that registrations would be significantly higher for JEE Main II, to be held in the month of April, as aspirants who didn’t register due to upcoming board exams would appear for the exam. Students, who are not satisfied with their score, would also try to improve their earlier score by appearing in the exam for the second time.

Format of JEE Main exam has changed from this year and National Test Agency (NTA) would be responsible for conducting the exam. This examination was being conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) till 2018. Several changes have been introduced in the exam pattern such as the exam would be conducted twice a year in January and April.  The exam would be conducted in 264 cities in India and 9 cities abroad. NTA has established a countrywide network of Test Practice centers (TPCs) so that everyone will have an opportunity to participate in practice sessions of attempting a Computer Based Test (CBT).

Engineering education continues to be male-dominated as 71% of the registrations are by male candidates. The number of SC aspirants is 9% and even lower at 3.7% for ST candidates. Over 15,000 candidates have registered under ‘person with disability’ category. Majority of the candidates are from urban areas with 54% registrations.

JEE Main is the national level entrance exam for the admission to various undergraduate engineering programs offered by NITs, IIITs and various other CFTIs.  This exam also works as the qualifying exam for JEE Advanced through which candidates can get admission to IITs, IISc and IIST.
