The verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC) section in CAT is considered the most confusing section out of the three sections. This section also carries the highest weightage as it comprises a total of 24 questions out of 66 questions. So, if you think this section is your weak area, you must put in extra effort and a lot of reading. With time, you will improve if you keep up with consistent practice and will surely ace the VARC section. We have mentioned some useful tips that you might want to consider in order to ace the VARC section of CAT 2024.
> Understand the VARC Syllabus: Before starting your VARC preparation, it is very
important to familiarize yourself with the CAT syllabus and exam pattern to identify the best
study strategy that will be a good choice, as there is no specified syllabus for this particular
section.
> Develop a Habit of Reading: If you’re aiming to ace the VARC section, you should first
develop a habit of reading. Dedicate at least an hour a day reading. You can start reading
almost anything such as newspapers, current affairs, magazines, storybooks, and so on, and
also topics like sports, arts, technology, history, business, etc. Read on various subjects and
then try to jot down and explain it your own way. This way, you’ll notice how much your
reading comprehension and penmanship have refined.
> Strengthen Your Grammar: When you read, make sure you carefully take note of the words
whose meaning you have no clue. Try to find the meaning of the words in the dictionary.
Maintain a copy so that you can come back and read it whenever you want. This way, you
can learn new words and allow you to improve your vocabulary. However, you must revise it
so that you don't forget what you have learned.
> Divide and Conquer: As we know, CAT is a highly competitive exam and in order to emerge
victorious, what you must do is to split your plan into multiple steps. Divide large topics and
set a specific time for each significant topic. Likewise, you can also divide topics into tiers
and practice regularly. This way you can easily conquer and finish your lessons in time.
> Practice Consistently: If you keep up with practicing consistently within 3-4 months time
you’ll witness how much you have improved. You can boost your CAT percentile immensely.
However, always keep in mind that consistent practice is the key to success. Don’t dilly-dally
after you have noticed an improvement because an absence of practice will worsen your
performance.
> Mock Test: There couldn't be any better than solving mocks to improve your performance.
You can also refer to the Free CAT Mock tests, which will not only help you practice and get
better at it but also enable you to develop the exam environment. So now you know why
mocks are so important and why you should not skip them.
