CAT Score vs Percentile

The CAT 2019 Result of the aspirant will contain two vital details: the Scaled Score and the Percentile. The scaled score of the individual is derived from the raw CAT Score and is calculated on the basis of the difficulty level difference between the two slots.

Before moving on to the Scaled score from the CAT 2019 Result, it is important to understand how the CAT 2019 Result raw score is calculated. The basic formula which is used to find the CAT Raw Score will be:

CAT 2019 Raw Score = (Number of Correct Attempts x 3) – (Number of incorrect MCQs marked)

The scaled score is calculated through a process of normalization where the score of the 0.1%ilers in the CAT exam and the 0.1%ilers in your slot are compared. Apart from this, the standard deviation and mean of candidates in your slot and the overall exam is also compared. Using these comparisons, the Normalized Score is calculated using the formula,

Mn = Mo - (Masd*Mi) - Miasd ( Mij - Miasd )+ Masd
Mn is the Normalized Score calculated for the candidate in the ith slot of the exam.
Mij is the actual marks obtained by the jth candidate in the ith slot,
Mo is the mean marks of the top 0.1 % candidates in all slots,
Masd is the sum of average and standard deviation of marks of all candidates in all slots,
Mi is the sum of marks of top 0.1 % candidates in the ith slot,
Miasd is the sum of average and standard deviation of marks of all candidates in the ith slot.

The Percentile that the candidate receives is the percentage of people who received less marks than them in the CAT Exam. This also means that the famed 100%ile does not truly exist. After all as the topper of the exam, you cannot score more than yourself. Thus the 100%ile is simply indicative and given to a group of candidates who have scored the highest or very close to the highest marks.
