About CAT

CAT (Common Admission Test) is the premium entrance exam held by IIMs for admissions into top business schools across India. The CAT Exam score is accepted as a qualifier in over 100 Business Schools. It is the most popular among the MBA Entrance Exams due to the vast number of colleges accepting the CAT Score including the top B-Schools in India such as IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, IIM Calcutta, IMT Ghaziabad, MDI Gurgaon, FMS New Delhi etc.

During the year 2017, IIMs, for the first time, released the CAT Question Paper and Answer Key, and this practice has continued in CAT 2018 & CAT 2019 as well. With this transparency leap, the CAT exam, which is an official Indian Entrance exam, is now being accepted by international business schools as well. Since CAT 2017, the CAT question paper has been released for public scrutiny which has convinced a few international business schools like Singapore Management University to accept the CAT score for admissions into their business programs.

Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning

The second section of the CAT exam is the most undefined and unstructured when it comes to preparing the syllabus for the CAT exam. Data Interpretation (DI) and Logical Reasoning (LR) consist of charts and graphs of all kinds i.e. line, bar, and pie. These may appear individually or along with tables or other elements.

  • The questions for the DILR comprise caselets, graphs, diagrams, binary logic and seating arrangement among other topics.
  • This section comprises 32% of the total CAT score with 16% each accounting for DI and LR sections separately.
  • The expected structure of the section will have 4 sets of questions with 2 sets having six questions and 2 sets having 4 questions.
  • The section comprises a mix of MCQ and TITA questions. Candidates should remember that TITA questions do not have any negative marking.

Here is how you can improve the DILR section.

Quantitative Aptitude

The final section of the CAT exam is entirely focused on school-level mathematics. The QA section is basically a calculation-intensive section based on topics that candidates study in 9th and 10th grade.

  • The section covers topics such as fractions, profit and loss, probability, exponents, coordinate geometry etc.
  • CAT 2022 exam is expected to be dominated by algebra and arithmetic with 4 questions of geometry in the section.
  • The 34% CAT score allotted to this section is thus solely focused on the mathematical aspect, unlike the previous sections where the percentage is split further.
  • The trick to attempting this section is preparing the syllabus and memorising the most common equations and formulae.

CAT 2022 Normalization Procedure

Since CAT is conducted in the morning, afternoon and evening slots on a single day, it becomes necessary to normalize the scores of all candidates from both slots. Therefore, IIMs normalize CAT scores by using a formula similar to that applied for GATE.

The scaled scores for each section along with percentiles are declared along with the result. This is practised for transparency and for equalizing the scores. This way, no candidates from either slot are left in an advantaged or disadvantaged position.

CAT 2021 Cutoff

CAT cut-off is an indication of the minimum percentile score that is expected of a candidate to achieve for getting shortlisted by the participating institutes. While top B-schools are known to have a higher CAT cut-off range, the minimum cut-off varies from institute to institute.

CAT cut-off is generally dependent on certain factors like difficulty level of the exam, number of test-takers, number of seats, etc.

CAT 2022 Selection Procedure

The selection procedure differs according to various participating institutes. However, the one uniform feature among all is the preliminary round selection where candidates are shortlisted based on the CAT cut-off.

For the second-round selection, candidates will have to appear for the Group Discussion (GD) or Writing Ability Test (WAT) or both and Personal Interview (PI) rounds. The new IIMs have in fact started to conduct the Common Admission Process (CAP) where the shortlisted candidates from all participating IIMs appear for WAT and PI rounds jointly.

After the end of the CAT selection procedure, each IIM releases their separate merit lists. The final selection process of B-schools or the CAT selection procedure of participating B-schools is based on multiple criteria such as performance in CAT and GD/WAT and PI rounds and past academic records and/or work experience. The criteria or parameters vary from institute to institute. IIMs release their detailed admission criteria after the CAT notification every year.
