This year, the Maharashtra Common Entrance Test or MAHCET MBA is likely to be conducted on 23rd, 24th and 25th of August 2022 as per the official notifications. It is a popular exam amongst aspirants seeking admission to Management programs in top business schools in Maharashtra. One of the top B-Schools targeted by students through this exam is JBIMS. How to Prepare for MAHCET 2022: Understand the Exam Pattern

The first step to prepare for the exam is to understand the structure of the paper. The exam pattern will help you identify the most important sections of the exam and the division of questions among the sections. Here are a few points that you must keep in mind regarding the MAH-CET 2022 exam-

  • There are four sections in the exam which are often divided into three broad divisions as Logical and Abstract Reasoning are placed together when studying for the exam.
  • Each question is an MCQ type question with 5 options. For every correct answer, 1 mark is awarded. The exam has no negative markings.
  • The total time allotted for the MAHCET paper is 150 minutes and no individual time is divided into sections.

How to Prepare for MAHCET 2022: Outline the Syllabus

The MAHCET syllabus is a mix of what you are preparing for other MBA entrance exams such as CAT, XAT, IIFT, SNAP, NMAT etc. You should also be prepared for a lengthy exam as there are 200 questions to be attempted in 150 minutes. So it is imperative that you understand the topics you need to cover before you begin preparing for the exam.

As per the guidelines of DTE, the MAHCET Syllabus comprises of four sections- logical reasoning, abstract reasoning, quantitative aptitude and verbal ability & reading comprehension. Here is an overview of the syllabus for the exam. Further, we will also discuss how to prepare for MAHCET section-wise.

MAHCET MBA 2022: Logical Reasoning

Logical reasoning is the lengthiest part of the exam with 75 questions. The topics covered in this section include arrangements, directions, series completion, venn diagrams, series, selection criteria and more.

Preparation:

  • Schedule1-2 topic tests and sectional tests weekly for this section.
  • Focus on increasing your speed in reading and attempting the questions. Time yourself and try reducing the total time steadily.
  • Previous year papers would give you good insight into the type of questions that can be asked. Thus, ensure that you solve the previous year papers of MAHCET. 
  • Invest in a good test-series of mocks and schedule these mocks intelligently so that there is no room of surprise at the last minute and your strategy for this section is in place well in advance.

MAHCET MBA 2022: Abstract Reasoning

This section of the paper comprises 25 marks. The section has a similar syllabus to logical reasoning. Series, Input-Output, Visual Reasoning, Coding-Decoding Series continuation etc. are some of the topics you should be preparing for this section.

Preparation:

  • This section has an abstract base, so candidates can prepare by drawing graphs and grids to understand the questions better.
  • Practice is the only method to improve on the section. This can be achieved by attempting mock exams and practising questions on a daily basis.
  • Good resources and books can help you prepare accurately and teach you the syllabus alongside.
  • Candidates should avoid spending too much time on tricky questions and have a strategy in place for this section.

MAHCET MBA 2022: Quantitative Aptitude

The quantitative aptitude section has approximately 50 questions and holds a weightage of 25%. The concepts in this section focus solely on school-level mathematics. Major topics include arithmetic, algebra, geometry, charts and graphs, linear equations, etc.

Preparation:

  • Learn to identify the sets and questions that you can quickly solve is the key to scoring well in this section.
  • Revise the mathematical concepts of class 8 to class 10.
  • Going through the previous year papers of MAHCET you would find that the questions were conventional but were calculation intensive.
  • Focus on techniques of approximation and mental calculations to boost your speed of solving questions quickly. 

MAHCET MBA 2022: Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension

The VARC section comprises of 25% of the paper with approximately 50 questions. The syllabus for VARC focuses on grammar, vocabulary and reading comprehensions. Some of the topics are para jumbles, error correction, fill in he blanks, reported speech, etc.

Preparation:

  • Again, speed is the key here. Reading comprehensions require a major focus on quickly analysing the paragraph and finding the answers.
  • Begin reading various newspapers, magazines and blogs to stay updated about world affairs and improve your reading skills.
  • Focus on improving your grammar and expanding your vocabulary as various questions require either skill.
  • Practise sample papers to understand your weak areas and also get an idea of the questions that are often asked in this section.

How to Prepare for MAHCET 2022: Preparation Tips

Some additional Preparation tips and Exam tips to keep in mind for MAHCET 2020:

  • Solve previous year papers: Solving previous papers will allow you to test your undestanding and preparation for the paper. It will also allow you to adapt to the paper pattern and strategy with which you attempt the paper.
  • Schedule reasoning tests weekly: Being the biggest section with the maximum marks, candidates should put focus on reasoning as it comprises of 50% of the paper. Covering the topics of this section well indicates that you will have prepared for half of the paper.
  • Invest in a good test-series: There are plenty of resources and reading material available online now. You can easily access books and test series that are currently the most relevant for your MAHCET preparation. It will help you get a good understanding of the paper pattern and variety of questions that are asked in the exam.
  • Be well acquainted with the topics: In order to avoid last minute surprises you should understand all the topics well. The paper has no fixed pattern and any question can be asked from the vast syllabus. Thus, to eliminate the risk of uncertainty you need to focus on laying the basic foundation for all sections. If the basics are not clear you would not be able to properly apply your knowledge in the exam.
  • Focus on Speed and Accuracy: Remember that it is a 200 question paper that needs to be attempted in under 150 minutes. Thus, the paper is an eclectic mix of topics and a test of your speed. Focus on topics that are your strengths and learn to solve questions quickly and with as uch accuracy as possible. Avoid spending too much time on any question and remember that there is no negative marking.

How to Prepare for MAHCET 2022: Last Month Practice

The last month before the upcoming exam is the most essential to brush up on everything you have learned. Here is how to prepare for MSHCET 2022 in the last month-

  • Revise the Concepts and Theories: By the last month you should have studied and learnt all the concepts you could cover. In the last month, the major focus should be on revising and getting accustomed to all the formulae and concepts across the sections.
  • Focus on Practice: Give as many mocks as much as you can. In the last month the entire focus should be on strengthening all the topics you have covered. It will help you identify the strengths and weakness to allow you to focus on an exam strategy that works in your favour.
  • Practice different levels of questions: Begin preparing with easy questions and steadily move on to questions of moderate and extreme level of difficulty. This will help you remember and revise all your concepts and help you prepare for any sort of paper.
  • Avoid learning new topics: The last month should not be focussed on acquiring new knowledge. In the race to understand something you might have left, you would weaken all the previous concepts you learnt. Instead of trying to makeup for the new topic, prepare the others well enough to compensate for that part.
