Management Aptitude Test (MAT), December 2017 (Paper Based) - Exam Analysis



The paper based Management Aptitude Test (MAT) was conducted on 10th December 2017. The test was very similar to previous years' papers.

The pattern of the test was as follows:

Language Comprehension

This section was dominated by Vocabulary and Reading Comprehension. There were a total of 4 Reading Comprehension passages. Each passage had 5 questions. The first two passages had around 400 words. The third and fourth passages were slightly longer and had around 650 words. The topics of the passages were varied and came from the areas of Philosophy (Virtual vs. Real), advertisements and their effect on people, formal education and traditional culture and lastly, pollution. Most of the questions were fact based. There were no vocab based questions in the RC section. Around three-four RC questions were inference based. Apart from RCs, a candidate had to answer Fill in the blanks (4 questions), Sentence improvement (2 questions), Para jumble (4 questions), Synonyms (3 questions), 1 word substitution (2 questions), Summary (2 questions) and Antonyms (3 questions). Overall, the level of difficulty in this section was moderate. A student can comfortably attempt 34-36 questions in this section.

Intelligence and Critical Reasoning

In this section, there were questions from both verbal reasoning and quant based reasoning. From the verbal section, there were questions on Assertion Reason (4 questions), Statement Conclusion (5 questions) and Statement Argument (5 questions). Interestingly, there were no questions on Cause and Effect. The remaining 26 questions were from quant based reasoning. Topics covered were blood relations, directions, analogy, series, etc. Overall, the level of difficulty was moderate. A student can attempt around 30-32 questions in this section.

Mathematical Skills

Like other years' question papers, most of the questions were from Arithmetic. Topics covered in this section were time, speed and distance, percentage, average, time and work, etc. There were around 3 questions on Mensuration. The level of difficulty in this year's paper can be categorised as easy-moderate. A student can attempt around 33-35 questions in this section.

Data Analysis and Sufficiency

This section was of moderate difficulty level. Questions came primarily from the areas of Data Sufficiency and Data Interpretation. An attempt of around 25-27 questions can be regarded as good attempt.

Indian and Global Environment

The questions in this section came mainly from areas of current affairs, sports, economy, history, advertisements, media, Nobel Prize recipients, Fiscal policies, names of heads of different government bodies such as Niti Aayog, etc. A student can comfortably attempt around 20 questions in this section.


Overall, the paper was of moderate difficulty level and an attempt of 140 to 150 questions can be considered as a good attempt.
