TISSNET 2018-2020 Analysis & Cut-offs

TISSNET 2018 broke the trend of "tough Non-CAT" exams this year. Keeping true to its norm, TISSNET gave a predictably easy paper with some minor changes. Conducted on January 6, 2018, the test continued with its computer based and non-negative format. Each correct answer carried 1 mark. The time limit was 100 minutes for 100 questions.

The test comprised three sections i.e. General Awareness (40 questions), Quantitative Ability and Logical Reasoning (30 questions) and English (30 questions). There were different types of questions in each section but there was no sectional time limit or cut-off.

The General Awareness and English sections threw in some minor surprises. They were both slightly tougher as compared to last year. One General knowledge question (the one on the definition of Sex and Gender) was a direct statement which can be found in CL's RC workshop sheet (CAT 17, passage on feminism). Most of the questions in GA were from current affairs and international news. The questions were lengthy and definition oriented. English too had two RC passages, a deviation from the normal one RC pattern of TISSNET. QA and DI section was easier.

Overall, the TISSNET 2018 paper was surely tougher, albeit mildly, as compared to the last year. We can expect a 4-5 mark drop in the cut-off score.

TISSNET 2018 Analysis: General Awareness section

It was still the toughest of the three as GK is never a favourite of students and many options needed students to read and know topics and facts in detail. However, most of the questions came from current affairs, census and current social & political issues. A student should have attempted all the questions with 70% accuracy. A score of 25-27 out of 40 should be ideal for this section. Moreover, one question regards the Gender and SEX concept was from a RC passage of CL.

TISSNET 2018 Analysis: Quantitative Ability section

Unlike last year there were no different sections marked for Mathematics, LR and DI. It had a total of 30 questions with 11 from Reasoning, 11 from Mathematics, and 8 from Data Interpretation. All questions were either easy or easy-moderate. Solving series and DI might have taken time for some students.

In Mathematics, Arithmetic dominated like last year. The questions were easy in nature. Anyone with a strong fundamental knowledge should have attempted all questions in this section. The DI section was dominated by charts. However, the law of approximation would have helped students in eliminating options as they were not very close. One question was wrong in the DI section.

A score of 27-28 is a good score in this section.

TISSNET 2018 Analysis: English section

Deviating from its obsession with synonyms/antonyms and idioms, TISSNET focused on Grammar and RC this year. The two words were pretty easy. One spot the error question (the one with water gushing out) was wrongly printed. The grammar questions dealt with common confusables and sentence correction. The concepts were mostly Subject-Verb Agreement.

One RC passage, the one that talked about desert, was short but not so sweet. The other RC passage dealt with the issue of cleanliness in Britain, perhaps a homage to "Swachh Bharat Mission".Unlike previous two years, there were two passages with five questions, though one passage was shorter while the other was long. It was an extremely easy passage with all factual questions. The options were easy to eliminate. However, two questions were really tricky. Hence, a student could have attempted and gotten all correct answers in the RC questions.

Overall the section was easy-moderate. A serious candidate can score 23-25 in this section.

The overall cut-off is mostly likely to decrease by 4-5 marks and go down to about 76 marks for general category candidates. For SC/ST candidates, the same is estimated to be around 64-66 marks.
