TISS-NET 2021: Pattern

TISS-NET is a university-level entrance examination conducted by the Tata Institute of Social Science (TISS) for the pursuit of admission into its BA/MA/Ph.D. programs.

TISS-NET 2021 will follow the lead of TISS-NET 2020, as far the exam pattern is concerned. There will be a number of objective-type questions in the paper, as per the latest notification of TISS (Mumbai). It is a 1 hour 40-minute-long examination held across 100 test centers in India.


TISS conducts the examination for the purpose of admission into its 52 reputed Masters’ Degree Programs conducted across its various campuses. Under the flagship TISS brand, there are 21 schools and 45 centers running at present. The main campuses are situated in:

Candidates can apply for 3 programs at most across two TISS campuses stating their specific location preferences. The preferences must be mentioned in the application form that is to be submitted at the time of registration. Some of the most sought-after programs offered by TISS include:

TISS-NET is held in a non-adaptive and online (CBT) mode. It comprises 100 questions and 3 main sections, which are General Awareness, Mathematics and Logical Reasoning, and English Proficiency. There has been a modification in the exam pattern of TISS-NET. The modifications are related to the marking scheme of the General Awareness section. We will discuss them a little later in the article.

There is no specific age limit to take TISS-NET.

Bachelor's Degree

Candidates should be having a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree of minimum of 3 to 4 years’ duration (or its equivalent). Candidates in the final year can also take the examination. In case of candidates seeking admission into LLM, they must have a qualified LLB degree with an aggregate of 50%.


Candidates of all nationalities can sit for TISS-NET.

Work Experience

Candidates with either no or some amount of work experience are equally eligible to apply.

Steps to register for the exam

The registration of TISS-NET can be completed in two modes I.e. online or offline. You can download the application form from the official website of TISS Mumbai in the third week of October. In case you are planning to send a written application form, you would need to request the TISS Mumbai campus for the same.

How to register offline?

For offline registration, you need to contact the main campus of TISS for an application form. Candidates hailing from remote areas of the country can avail of this facility. The application form will be sent to you via speed post, within a week’s time. After that, you need to fill the form, attach your attested documents, and send it back.

Thus, a candidate’s TISS-NET score will not be a parameter in the 2nd stage or final selection. Instead, it will be the TISS-MAT score.
