Group Discussion Round

Group Discussion is the initial shortlisting round that a candidate needs to appear for post declaration of XAT results. It is wholly based on the concept of “Debate” and partially on "Extempore." During the GD round, candidates who have achieved the required XAT Percentile clubbed into groups and handed over a particular topic/case study. The candidate needs to go to the crux of the topic or case study given, engage in decision-making, and present sensible views/arguments regarding the possible outcomes/repercussions.

The prime purpose of conducting a group discussion round is to assess a candidate’s considerable skills in one go, i.e., decision making, verbal communication, analytical reasoning, and leadership skills. You need to analyze the possible outcomes and then deliver the argument in front of the panel. The group discussion round is monitored and regulated by a moderator explicitly hired for this purpose. He stays silent throughout the round, only raising his voice if things heat up among the candidates. The only way to prepare sincerely for a group discussion is by furbishing your communication skills, grammatical skills, and reading up on current affairs topics from all over the world. The more you read, the more you remember, and the more confidence you feel during the discussion.

WAT (Written Test Ability):

Written Test Ability or Essay writing is a distinctive mental ability that can be of massive help during XLRI shortlisting rounds. A well-written essay is a simultaneous assessment of your sentence formation, grammar, thought procedure, and oral communication. This round usually succeeds the group discussion round and has always been part and parcel of the traditional admission practice of XLRI Jamshedpur. If you could carry on from the shock of the group discussion round, you would not face any problem in cracking this round smoothly. The candidates would receive the essay topic by the admissions committee and would be given a specific time interval to complete the essay and hand it over. Here are some strategies that would come in handy during this particular round.

1. Keep the tone of the essay unbiased and neutral. Do not contextualize your text in favor of one specific entity. Discuss the pros and cons of the topic and align the essay to the relevance of the topic.

2. Do not jump on to any conclusion while analyzing the topic of the essay. The content of the topic might be persuasive, but that does not mean that you would drive it in one particular direction.

3. Back your essay with supportive facts and figures. The more you substantiate the content of the essay, more weighted would it be in terms of appropriateness. Do not beat about the bush.

4. Structure the essay outline properly. The correct format comprises an introductory paragraph that presents your topic, two paragraph bodies stating the core purpose of the essay and conclusion to wrap up the main points together

5. Pay attention to the instructed word limit and the time limit of the essay. The word limit ensures that every candidate participating in the essay writing acknowledges the expectations of the jury and is assessed in an impartial manner. It also contrives a student to keep his/her essay crisp, thereby conveying the correct information.
