CAT 2020 Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC) Analysis

The VARC section continued to be tricky in terms of the questions asked , making it similar to CAT 2019. This was a slightly lengthy section, which was contrary to expectations. There were a total of 26 questions to be attempted in 40 minutes.

6 questions were Non-MCQs (all in Verbal). The RC passages were around 450-500 words each. They were easy to read. Questions were moderate with tricky options.

Since there were 4 passages, 3 would have been an ideal attempt. 4 would have been a risk.

VA was fine, as usual. Para Summary had short answers; and the options were tricky. Summary questions had very close options. Para Jumbles were of a higher level of difficulty.

Overall, an attempt of 20-22 with 75% accuracy, leading to a score of 40-42, can be considered enough for a 99%ile. An 85%ile should lead to around 24-26 marks. All the TITA (Non MCQ questions) should have been attempted, as usual.

CAT 2020 Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR) Analysis

The DILR section had 24 questions distributed across 5 sets (6+6+4+4+4). DILR went back to CAT 2016- 18 levels, after providing a breather , in terms of LOD, in CAT 2019. Again, the number of non-MCQs was 6. 3 Sets were manageable. Venn diagram and the set on cab driver was easy. Table set was somewhat difficult. There were 2 sets with 6 questions, and 3 sets with 4 questions each.

In the given time duration of 40 minutes, an attempt of 12-13 with 90% accuracy, leading to a score of 30-32, can be considered ideal for 99+ percentile in DILR. An 85 percentile should be around 18 marks.

CAT 2020 Quantitative Aptitude (QA) Analysis

As expected, the QA section of CAT 2020 was similar to that of CAT 2019, in terms of LOD. It had 26 short questions to be attempted in 40 minutes. The section had 6 non-MCQs.

Surprisingly (hopefully, a pleasant one), the focus on Numbers was higher than that on Geometry. An attempt of 18-19 questions, with 80-85% accuracy, would be ideal for 99+ percentile in the QA section of CAT 2020.

Candidates would have done well to maintain their calm and follow the guidelines shared by Career Launcher, in all it s sessions. The overall cutoff for a 99 percentile is expected to range around 105-110, as predicted, pre- CAT 2020.
