CBSE’s moderation policy

This year there has been much ado about CBSE’s moderation policy which CBSE wanted to scrap but couldn’t due to High Court order. Now many readers would be confused as to what this moderation policy is. CBSE has this policy of moderation under which the evaluators are instructed to revise (increase) the marks of some students based on the difficulty level of the set that the student has attempted. As we all know, generally for every exam CBSE sets 3 different set of different difficulty level. So, it means if a student has managed to score X marks in SET A which is presumed to be difficult in comparison to the other two sets by the evaluators themselves then they can revise that students mark to X+5 or X+10 (whatever they may choose) so as to make that student’s score moderate to others. Also, evaluators tend to increase marks of some students whose scores are just below the passing line by giving some ‘grace marks’, so the students don’t flunk the paper. High Court has ordered CBSE not to do away with the policy, saying that such decision cannot be taken abruptly if CBSE had to do so they should have announced it way before exams and that “the rules cannot be changed once the game has started.”

A total of 10, 98,981 candidates from across 10,678 schools are expecting their CBSE Class 12 results this year in 2017. This is a 2.82% increase from the number of students who appeared last year. The CBSE class 12 exams for various streams continued from 9th of March to 29th of April this year.  Due to a delay in the results already, CBSE is announcing results for all its regions simultaneously.

This year there has already been a delay from CBSE’s side in announcing the results which has increased students’ and their parents’ anxiety more because DU has already started with its admission process for UG courses on 22nd May. However, earlier DU had not denied the possibility of change in the schedule if CBSE results get delayed.

However, now with results out we are sure that students and their parents are slightly relieved.
