MICAT stands for the MICA Admission Test. It is a computer-based (online) test conducted by MICA Ahmedabad for admission into its flagship programmes in communications and management.
It’s not just a typical aptitude test; it assesses creative and analytical thinking, writing ability, psychometric traits, and general management aptitude — all aligned to MICA’s positioning as “The School of Ideas”.
For admission, MICAT caters primarily to the following programmes:
PGDM-C (Post Graduate Diploma in Management – Communications) at MICA
PGDM (Post Graduate Diploma in Management) at MICA (with communications/marketing emphasis)
You must check the latest brochure for the exact intake and any new programmes, because MICA also runs certificate and online programmes.
As per the latest information:
Candidates should have a Bachelor’s degree (in any discipline) from a university recognised by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).
Candidates appearing in the final year of their bachelor’s degree are also eligible (subject to submission of results later).
In addition to appearing for MICAT, candidates must have a valid score in one of the national exams: CAT, XAT, or GMAT (specific years as applicable).
Here’s how MICAT is typically structured (note: always check the current brochure for any changes):
Mode: Computer Based Test (CBT).
Frequency: Conducted twice a year (MICAT-I and MICAT-II) for the same admission cycle. Best of the two scores is considered.
Sections:
Section A – Psychometric Test: Qualifier in nature; assesses personality, thinking style.
Section B – Descriptive Test: Written / essay / story-type questions to assess writing, creativity.
Section C – Aptitude Test: Objective-type questions from sub-sections such as Divergent & Convergent Thinking (Creative), Verbal Ability, Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation, General Awareness.
Duration: Past trends suggest around 135 minutes (2 hours 15 minutes) for Sections B + C (excluding Psychometric).
Negative marking: Yes, in the objective (aptitude) part.
Based on latest projections:
MICAT I registration opens around September 2025 and closes around November 2025. MICAT I exam around first week of December 2025.
MICAT II registration opens around late November 2025, closes around January 2026.
MICAT II exam around last week of January 2026.
Results and subsequent GE/PI rounds follow. Always check the official website (mica.ac.in) for confirmed dates.
Admission to MICA via MICAT involves multiple steps:
Appear in one of CAT / XAT / GMAT and qualify/meet eligibility.
Register for and appear in MICAT (I and/or II).
Shortlisting for Group Exercise (GE) and Personal Interview (PI) based on performance in above.
Final merit list is prepared combining various elements such as CAT/XAT/GMAT score, MICAT score, GE, PI, and sometimes academic background. For example, one source suggests:
CAT/XAT/GMAT: ~35% weight
MICAT: ~25% weight
GE: ~10%
PI: ~20%
Academics (10th, 12th, graduation): ~5%
MICA is unique in India (and even the region) as a residential institute dedicated to strategic marketing and communication.
This means your learning is not just general management but oriented towards brands, media, storytelling, creativity + analytics — which is increasingly relevant today.
MICAT, by design, rewards creative thinkers — not just pure quant/logic test-takers. That gives you a chance to showcase your personality, creativity and thinking differently.
For aspirants wanting to specialise in marketing/communication rather than a generic MBA, this path is very well suited.
Here are some effective tips tailored for MICAT:
Practice creative writing regularly: essays, stories, reflections. Section B is going to evaluate writing style and originality.
Work on verbal ability (reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar) and quantitative/data interpretation since Section C includes these.
Cultivate general awareness especially related to marketing, brands, media, current business and communication trends.
For psychometric (Section A) — authenticity matters. There are no “right/wrong” in typical sense; more about consistency in your responses.
Try mock tests that simulate the structure: Psychometric + Descriptive + Aptitude. Time yourself, get used to the format.
Analyse past years’ patterns (though MICA doesn’t publish full detailed breakdown always) to identify areas of strength/weakness.
Since MICA values creativity and communication, your application form, interview should reflect genuine interest in communication/marketing, evidence of creative/extra-curricular engagement, and clarity of purpose.
If you’re someone who enjoys thinking “outside the box”, who is curious about brands, consumer behaviour, storytelling and influence, then MICAT is your gateway to a very specialised and esteemed programme at MICA.
But remember: it’s not just about raw quant/logic — it’s about creativity + communication + strategy. Success in MICAT will come from combining all these.
Start early, plan your preparation, stay updated, and most importantly—be yourself (because that's what the psychometric + descriptive sections will test in their way).
