WHAT IS CIVIL SERVICE?

The Civil Services refer to the career bureaucrats who are the permanent executive branch of the Republic of India. The civil service system is the backbone of the administrative machinery of the country. In other words, services under the State in its civil capacity are called Civil Services.

Civil Services is the functional body responsible for carrying on the administration under the direction and control of ‘elected representatives’ of people and in accordance with the rules and principles. It is the function of the Civil Services to fulfill the Will of the Parliament, as formulated by the Cabinet i.e., the Cabinet works out the policies of the government.

The Civil Services see that these policies, when duly approved by the Parliament, is faithfully executed. Their main job is to assist the government in policy formulation and then implementing these policies on ground in the most efficient manner.

WHY CIVIL SERVICES?

Once a politician said to a group of civil servants, “You can do without us but I am fully convinced that we could not do without you.”

  • It’s a glamorous, powerful job with a lot of prestige: Trust me, giving up your entire youth and middle age in a mediocre (after graduation school) job isn't the kind of challenge you seek in life.
  • The preparation for the Civils itself is such a thing, which will make an everlasting impact on your personality.
  • If you think intelligence (high IQ, or technical expertise) or communication skills are the criteria on which you can get any job. Try this one. You get to learn a lot about your country, planet and life.
  • There are regular duties like development, law and order, court work, yet each file is unique, each case is different.
  • You will have an appreciation for your country: It’s easy to sit back and complain about, why Modi is pro-industrialists or why UPA didn't do well, without even knowing a single crap about polity or governance or the situation of our economy (all the tea time 'charcha' that we do with each other). Believe me such discussions just make us delusional day by day and doesn't add a single thing of net worth. But if you try becoming an IAS officer, you will have a better understanding of how the country runs and won’t have those foolish prejudices.
  • And above all; not to forget the difference that you can make to the nation being a civil servant.

Apart from these, you have all the possible facilities one would need. A chauffeur-driven car, footmen in attendance, a full pledged bungalow fully furnished and kept ready for occupation on your arrival at the place, an office spacious enough to live in. You also get a lot of opportunity to travel.
