Till 2020, the Central Universities—except for the 14 established in 2009 and after, and few others— have been admitting students to their undergraduate courses based on Class XII Board marks; resulting in tremendous mental pressure for students. With the ever-rising cut-offs, the best of the Central Universities (like the University of Delhi) was getting out of reach for many. Moreover, as there was no uniformity among the various examination Boards regarding syllabus and difficulty, students from some of the Boards got an undue advantage.
To overcome this issue, the Ministry of Education has decided that from the academic year 2021, CUCET will be a single entrance for admission to undergraduate courses offered by all the Central Universities.
CUCET 2021 is still in the discussion stages. The Ministry of Education has formed an expert Committee, which is working on the various aspects of the exam, including the pattern and weightages which need to be assigned to CUCET scores for admissions in the participating Central Universities.
However, CUCET 2021 is expected to be a General Ability Test with focus on:
The exam will be conducted in two parts.
Part A: (25 questions) reasoning, general knowledge, general aptitude, English, numerical aptitude/data interpretation
Part B: (75 questions) Physics, Chemistry, mathematic and biology.
Note: candidate will have to attempt any three sections of part B of the exam.
Candidates applying for some integrated programme/LL.B/MCA/MBA or any other general programme will have only one paper consisting of 100 MCQs. This shall cover topics like Reasoning, Data Interpretations/Numerical Ability, Analytical Skills, General Awareness and English Language.
CUCET has a provision for negative marking. So, it is imperative that a candidate is careful about the risks involved, and refrain from making too many guesses.
The exact marking scheme for CUCET 2021 will be known once the official notification is released.
While CUCET 2020 was the gateway to 14 Central Universities, CUCET 2021 will open the doors for all the 54 Central Universities in the country. These Universities are likely to provide a minimum of 50% weightage to the CUCET score for admissions to their undergraduate courses. Hence, it is important that students focus on preparing well for the exam, so as to ensure a seat in a program and university of their choice.
