What is IELTS?

  • The IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is a standardized exam that is held for educational, immigration and occupational purposes for non-native English speakers.
  • It is accepted by over 10,000 institutions across 140 countries worldwide.
  • IELTS is jointly owned by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia, and Cambridge Assessment English.
  • It is an international language test where both UK and US spelling usage is allowed.
  • Depending on the entry requirements of study programmes, one has to either take the Academic or General Training IELTS exam.

What is TOEFL?

  • TOEFL (The Test of English as a Foreign Language) is a standardized exam to assess the English proficiency of non-native English speakers.
  • It is conducted for admissions into international universities where the medium of instruction is English.
  • Administered and directed by Educational Testing Service (ETS), over 10,000 universities in more than 150 countries accept TOEFL ® scores.
  • It is held all year round with around 50 test dates.
  • While the exam cost varies according to geography, TOEFL exam in India costs USD 170.

Universities accepting IELTS and TOEFL

For non-native English speakers, one is required to appear a standardized exam to test the English language proficiency. This test is held as part of the application process to take admissions/study in international universities with English medium.

Two most widely accepted worldwide tests are Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) test and International English Language Test System (IELTS).
