VARC Question Format

Usually, verbal ability questions are passages of 500-700 words, followed by 5-6 questions based on the passage. 

The questions cab be of three different types: 

  1. Direct questions - Answers would explicitly be mentioned in the passage. Good reading and summarizing skills come in handy for this section. 
  2. Indirect questions - Reader has to extract from the passage what the writer wants to convey. This requires speedy reading habits, which come with consistent reading. This would require a lot of inference and thinking from different perspectives. 
  3. Contextual Vocabulary questions - Emphasis on words and their synonyms, antonyms, and usage.

Tips and Tricks to crack Verbal Ability in IPMAT

One of the biggest IPMAT 2023 insights to cracking Verbal ability is to focus on understanding what is given in the passage. Here are a few ways to accurately attempt the section: 

  1. Being able to summarizing the essential details of a passage proficiently: requires reading editorials articles and blogs, and summarizing them on a regular basis. 
  2. Identifying what to read and what not to: Given the time crunch, it is not practical to read the entire passage word to word. Instead, it is advisable to skim through the passage for important details.
  3. Width of awareness: A student should read articles and blogs on Sociology, Politics, Literature, Science, Management & Economics, Psychology, and Art, as these are frequently covered in the test. 
  4. Elimination method: Once the student is well versed with how to approach a passage, they must know about how to approach the right answer, and that is by eliminating the wrong answers.
