RBI Grade B Eligibility 2020 [Qualification, Age Limit & Number Of Attempts

RBI has specific set eligibility criteria for the coveted RBI Grade B officer exam that every candidate needs to qualify for appearing in the examination and getting selected as the RBI Grade B officer. The eligibility criteria are set on different parameters including nationality, educational qualification, and age.

This article will discuss the RBI Grade B eligibility criteria along with the notification, RBI Grade B Syllabus and topper-recommended booklist for RBI Grade B preparation.

RBI Grade B Eligibility - Nationality

According to the RBI Officer Grade B Eligibility set by the RBI, the candidate must either be:

  1. A citizen of India, or
  2. A subject of Nepal, or
  3. A subject of Bhutan, or
  4. A Tibetan refugee who came over to India before 1st January 1962 with the intention of
  5. permanently settling in India, or
  6. A person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African
  7. countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia
  8. and Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.

Provided that a candidate belonging to categories (b), (c), (d), and (e) shall be a person in whose favor a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the Government of India. A candidate in whose case a certificate of eligibility is necessary may be admitted to the examination, but the offer of appointment may be given only after the necessary eligibility certificate is issued to him/her by the Government of India.

RBI Grade B Eligibility- Educational Qualification



Officers in Grade ‘B’ (DR) - (General)

At least 60% marks in Graduation (50% for reserved categories i.e SC/ST/PwBD) or an equivalent grade in Bachelor’s degree along with 10th and 12th standard examinations from any recognized university/board. The minimum qualifying percentage or an equivalent grade for the Bachelor’s degree will be in aggregate for all semesters/years

Officers in Grade ‘B’ (DR) - (DEPR)

A Master's Degree in Econometrics/ Economics / Quantitative Economics/ Integrated Economics Course/  Mathematical Economics /Finance, with a minimum of 55% marks or an equivalent grade in aggregate of all semesters /years from a recognized Indian or Foreign University /Institute; OR
PGDM/ MBA Finance with a minimum of 55% marks or an equivalent grade in aggregate of all semesters /years from a recognized Indian or Foreign University /Institute; OR
Master’s Degree in Economics in any of the subcategories of economics i.e. agricultural/ developmental/ business/ applied, etc., with at least 55% marks or an equivalent grade in aggregate of all semesters /years from a recognized Indian or Foreign University /Institute.

Officers in Grade ‘B’ (DR) - (DSIM)

A Master's Degree in Statistics/ Mathematical Statistics/ Mathematical Economics/ Econometrics/ Statistics & Informatics from IIT-Kharagpur/ Applied Statistics & Informatics from IIT-Bombay with a minimum of 55% marks or equivalent grade in aggregate of all semesters/years; OR
Master's Degree in Mathematics with a minimum of 55% marks or an equivalent grade in aggregate of all semesters/years and a one-year post-graduate diploma in Statistics or related subjects from an Institute of repute; OR
M. Stat. Degree of Indian Statistical Institute with a minimum of 55% marks in aggregate of all semesters/years; OR
Post Graduate Diploma in Business Analytics (PGDBA) jointly offered by ISI Kolkata, IIT Kharagpur, and IIM Calcutta with a minimum of 55% marks or equivalent grade in aggregate of all semesters/years.

RBI Grade B Age Limit

Candidates between the age of 21 and 30 years are eligible to apply for the examination. The exact cutoff date is mentioned in the official notification of the specific year which is yet to be released by the RBI. According to the latest notification (RBI Grade B 2019) which is available on the official website, the cutoff date was 1st of September 2019 i.e., he/she must have been born not earlier than 2nd September 1989 and not later than 1st September 1998. For candidates possessing M.Phil. and Ph.D. qualification, upper age limit will be 32 and 34 years respectively.

RBI Grade B Number of Attempts

The maximum number of attempts for general category students for appearing in Phase-I is 6 which means that candidates belonging to the unreserved category who have already appeared six times for the phase-I examination are not eligible to apply again. However, there is no such restriction on the candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC/PwBD/EWS categories.

RBI Grade B Notification

RBI is expected to release the official notification for the RBI Grade B officer exam in July 2020 and the exam may be conducted in September 2020. RBI Grade B Syllabus & Booklist

RBI Grade B exam is conducted in three phases namely RBI Grade B Phase-II or Prelims, RBI Grade B Phase-II or Mains and Interview. In RBI Grade B Prelims exam, the paper consists of four sections namely General Awareness, English Language, Quantitative Aptitude and Reasoning spanning across 200 questions of 200 marks. The highest weightage is of General Awareness from which 80 questions of one-mark-each is asked. RBI Grade B Phase-II, on the other hand, is a subject-centric examination and the papers included in this exam are Economic & Social Issues, English Writing Skills, and Finance & Management.
