Step-by-step Guide to
Apply for Student Visa in New Zealand
All applications for the New Zealand Fee-Paying Student Visa must be submitted online through the Immigration New Zealand portal. Paper applications are no longer accepted. Indian students are strongly encouraged to apply at least 3 months before their intended travel date.
Obtain your official Offer of Place from an approved New Zealand education provider. The offer must include the name of your course, its duration, whether it is full-time or part-time, and scheduled holiday dates if the course spans more than one academic year. Your education provider must also confirm that you have the English language ability and academic capability to pass the course.
Demonstrate that you have sufficient funds to cover your tuition fees and living expenses. For tertiary, English language, or other non-compulsory study you must show proof of at least NZD 20,000 per year if studying for one year or more, or NZD 1,667 per month for courses shorter than one year. You must also show that you have paid your tuition fees for one year of study, or one course, whichever is shorter, before your visa can be issued.
Valid medical and travel insurance is a mandatory condition of the Student Visa and must be in place from the start of your course until your visa expires. Your education provider will advise you on what your insurance policy must cover, or may arrange insurance on your behalf. Note that PhD students are exempt from this insurance requirement.
If you will be staying in New Zealand for more than 6 months, a chest X-ray is required as India does not have a low incidence of tuberculosis. A full medical examination may also be required depending on your length of stay. A police certificate from India is required if you are aged 17 or older and your total time in New Zealand will be 24 months or longer. All medical evidence must be less than 3 months old and police certificates must be less than 6 months old at the time of application.
Create an account on the Immigration New Zealand online portal and complete the Student Visa application form. Upload all required documents including your passport, Offer of Place, proof of tuition fee payment, proof of living expenses, insurance confirmation, medical and police certificates where required, and a return travel ticket or proof of funds to purchase one.
