What Is a Good GMAT Focus Edition Score for Indian MBA Programs?

The answer depends on which tier you are targeting:

Tier 1: ISB and IIM Executive Programs (PGPX, EPGP, MBAEx, IPMX)

  • Competitive Focus scores start at 645 and the sweet spot sits between 655 and 680
  • ISB’s Class of 2026 Focus average of ~669 sits at roughly the 92nd percentile globally, a high bar
  • These programs compete directly with top global one-year MBAs on selectivity and GMAT benchmarks
  • Work experience and overal application strength matter as much as the score — the average admitted student brings 7–9 years

Tier 2: SPJIMR, IMT, NMIMS, Great Lakes, TAPMI, XUB, IFMR,

  • Competitive Focus scores range from approximately 555 to 625
  • These programs accept GMAT alongside CAT — most admitted students come through CAT
  • GMAT applicants are a smaller cohort, and score expectations are more accessible
  • Holistic profile evaluation remains rigorous regardless of test route

One important nuance across both tiers: the GMAT score is one input in a holistic evaluation that also weighs academic record, work experience quality, essays, and interview performance. At the IIM executive programs, especially, a compelling 7–9 year career narrative often carries as much weight as the score itself.

Your GMAT Score Is Just One Piece of the Puzzle

FAQs

1. What is a good GMAT Focus Edition score for top Indian MBA programs?

A good score depends on your target schools. For Tier 1 programs like ISB and IIM executive MBAs, a competitive score typically starts around 645, with a safer target in the 655–685+ range. For Tier 2 schools, competitive scores generally fall between 555 and 625.

2. Should I aim for the class average GMAT score?

Not really. Targeting the class average puts you in the middle of the pool, meaning many admitted candidates already scored higher. It’s smarter to aim above the average to improve your chances, especially for competitive programs.

3. Do Indian MBA programs accept GMAT Focus Edition scores?

Yes. Most top Indian business schools now accept GMAT Focus Edition scores, though some are still transitioning and may publish estimated or converted averages. Always check the official program website for the latest requirements.

4. Is GMAT the only factor considered in admissions?

No. Admissions are holistic. Along with your GMAT score, schools evaluate your work experience, academic background, essays, leadership potential, and interview performance. A strong profile can offset a slightly lower score.

5. Can I apply to Indian MBA programs with a low GMAT score?

Yes, especially for Tier 2 programs where score expectations are more flexible. However, you’ll need a strong overall profile—solid academics, impactful work experience, and compelling essays—to stay competitive. This is where Career Launcher Study Abroad can make a real difference. From refining your profile and positioning your achievements to building a compelling application narrative, expert guidance ensures every part of your application works together, so your GMAT score translates into actual admits.
