How Is CAT Percentile Calculated?

The calculated percentile of each aspirant is given on the respective scorecard. The convening body on the official website of CAT also provides the method of calculating the percentile. Here is the method used to calculate the percentiles in CAT 2024:

N = Number of candidates who appeared for CAT 2025

r = The rank assigned to candidates based on their scaled scores

Note: If two or more candidates' scaled scores are the same, they will be given the same rank (r). That is, if two candidates get the highest scaled score in VARC, they will be assigned rank 1. Also, the candidate with the second-highest scaled score will follow at rank 3. The Final Percentile (P) will be rounded off to two decimal places.

CAT 2025 Selection Process & IIM Admission Criteria

The IIM admission process differs among the various participating institutes. Further, it is worth noting that there are two stages to qualify for the CAT 2024 Selection Process:

Phase 1: It includes the profile score and the test score (CAT/XAT/NMAT, etc), out of which the profile score may include your academic performance, work experience, and academic and gender diversity, which may vary based on the Institute’s pre-defined weightages/ preferences. (The CAT percentile is a key part of the shortlisting process, but interview calls also depend on factors like your academic record, work experience, and category.
Phase 2: Shortlisted candidates appear for the Writing Ability Test (WAT) or Analytical Writing Test (AWT)and a Personal Interview (PI). Most IIMs have replaced Group Discussions (GD) with WAT/AWT and institutes like SPJIMR conduct Group Interviews (GI). Institutes such as IIM Shillong, IIM Rohtak, IIM Indore, FMS, and few others also conduct extempore. The newer IIMs follow a Common Admission Process (CAP) for WAT and PI, while some (like IIM Kashipur, IIM Bodh Gaya, and IIM Sirmaur) conduct a Joint Admission Process (JAP). A few other B-schools may include case discussions or group tasks as part of their selection rounds.

After the CAT results are declared, each B-School conducts its own selection process based on its admission policy.
