NMAT 2026 testing opens on 2 November, and registration closes on 10 October. With roughly 30 days left, the right NMAT 30-days preparation tips matter more than extra study hours. The test is adaptive; you can’t go back to a question, and your first few answers shape everything that follows. This guide details the strategy shared by our MBA expert Mentor

Registration and Scheduling
Register on the GMAC NMAT portal and book your slot now, because NMAT registration closes on 10 October. Don’t wait for the slot-booking deadline. NMAT registration does not apply you to NMIMS automatically. You have to fill the NMIMS form separately, or do it through EasyApply.
Attempts and Retakes
You can take NMAT up to three times in the window, but NMIMS counts only your first attempt. So don’t spend attempt one casually. The mentor also advises against taking it in the first 7–10 days of the window, so you have time to take mocks and analyse them first.
Exam-day documents
The mentor recommends carrying your NMAT ID card (original), a secondary ID proof and a photocopy of your primary ID.
NMAT Exam Pattern: How It Differs from CAT
Many CAT takers treat NMAT as an alternative exam. It tests similar skills, but time, navigation and scoring work differently.
| Section | Questions | Time | Time per question |
| Language Skills | 36 | 28 min | about 47 sec |
| Logical Reasoning | 36 | 40 min | about 67 sec |
| Quantitative Skills | 36 | 52 min | about 87 sec |
Rules that change your strategy
- No negative marking. Attempt every question.
- You choose the section order from six possible sequences before the test starts.
- No question palette. You can’t skip or revisit a question. Every question must be answered before you move on.
- Passages need scrolling. On RC and DI sets, the mentor noted that the system won’t let you proceed until you’ve scrolled through the whole passage.
- Scoring. Each section is scored on a 12–120 scale, so the total runs from 36 to 360.

How the Adaptive Format Works and Why Your First 10 Questions Matter
NMAT judges your level in the opening questions and then keeps you near that level. Early mistakes therefore cost far more than late ones.
Two students, the same raw score
Understand this from an example: Student A gets the first 8 questions right and misses 2. Student B gets 3 right, misses 2, then gets 3 right. Both end up with 8 correct out of 10. But A lands around the 80th percentile and B around the 50th, because B’s level was judged lower early on.
The time rule
Spend extra time on the first 8–10 questions of each section. If your average is one minute per question, taking 12–12.5 minutes on the first ten is fine. After that, guess and move on whenever you’re stuck.

Section-wise NMAT Preparation Strategy
The mentor’s section plan is below. Question counts are his reading of last year’s paper, so treat them as a guide, not an official split.
Logical Reasoning (36 questions, 40 minutes)
Last year, about 23 questions were verbal reasoning and about 13 were analytical reasoning.
- Verbal reasoning: syllogisms, assumptions, conclusions, course of action, strengthening and weakening, inferences, implicit arguments and decision making.
- Analytical reasoning: each setup carries only one question, so it’s easier than CAT’s DILR. Expect grids, logical Venn diagrams, input-output, alphanumeric series and coding-decoding.
- Syllogism trick: draw Venn diagrams and build the extreme case. An answer holds only if it works in every case.
- Alphabet trick: write A–Z at the start of the test in buckets of 10, 10 and 6 to speed up series questions.
- Input-output trick: write out the logic of each step before you answer anything.
- Time cap: about 60 seconds, then move on.
Quantitative Skills (36 questions, 52 minutes)
The paper is easier than CAT but more number-heavy. Expect arithmetic, number systems, P&C and higher-order probability, progressions, logs and quadratics.
- Data Interpretation sits inside this section, with about 3–4 sets of 4 questions each last year.
- Data sufficiency also appears, so practise it.
- Geometry barely appeared last year, so skip it if you’re short on time.
- Time cap: about 90 seconds per question.
Language Skills (36 questions, 28 minutes)
- About 12 questions came from three RCs, and about 5 from para-jumbles.
- The rest was grammar (error spotting, fill-in-the-blanks, prepositions) and vocabulary.
- Clear grammar and vocab in about 14 minutes, give RCs about 10, and keep about 4 for para-jumbles. Guess the last RC if time runs out.
- Time cap: about 45 seconds per question.
Attempt order and guessing
- The suggested order is Logical Reasoning, then Quant, then Language Skills. Reasoning needs your freshest mind, Quant gives you a mental reset, and Language Skills is mostly reading.
- Lock your order in mocks and don’t experiment on test day.
- When you have to guess, pick the option you’ve been choosing most often in your serious attempts; this is an expert suggestion.

30-Day NMAT Study Plan Alongside CAT Preparation
CAT is on 29 November, so NMAT has to share your calendar. This plan keeps NMAT work running alongside your regular CAT mocks.
| Week | Focus | Mock rhythm |
| 1 | Learn the format, write one NMAT mock as a diagnostic, start LR drills and daily grammar-vocab | 2 CAT + 1 NMAT |
| 2 | Analyse the mock, drill syllogisms, input-output and series, then Quant arithmetic and DI | 2 CAT + 1 NMAT |
| 3 | Time-capped sectionals, lock your section order, practise guessing | 2 CAT + 1 NMAT |
| 4 | Final NMAT mock, light revision, one full day off | 2 CAT + 1 NMAT |
Weekly mock rhythm
The mentor’s rule is no more than 3 mocks a week, with a day for analysis after each. Over five weeks, that works out to roughly 8–9 CAT mocks and 4–5 NMAT mocks. Keep one day each week for full revision.
When to take your first attempt
Avoid 21 November, which is too close to CAT. The mentor suggests roughly 10–16 November. If your mock scores are still low, early December (around 5–8 December) gives you more time.
NMAT Cut-offs, Target Score and Colleges to Shortlist
NMAT Cut-offs 2026 and selection weightages have changed since NMIMS added a competency test with the NMAT 2024 cycle. Don’t plan around the cut-off alone.
| Section | What Candidates should target |
| Quant | 80+ |
| Logical Reasoning | 80+ |
| Language Skills | 82–85 |
| Overall | 235+ |
NMAT Score targets
Last year, NMIMS shortlisted at 209 overall, with a sectional cut-off of about 62. In the current NMIMS selection process, NMAT counts for 10%, the competency test for 60%, and the personal interview and work experience for 15% each. Even so, the mentor advises aiming for 235+ for a safe call.
NMAT Colleges
Prioritise NMIMS Mumbai, then Navi Mumbai and Bengaluru, followed by Hyderabad and Indore. Top MBA colleges that accept NMAT scores include KJ Somaiya, TAPMI, XIMB and Great Lakes.
Backup exams
Keep CAT, XAT, SNAP and MH-CET (for Maharashtra candidates) as backups. A bad day can happen to anyone. Applying through EasyApply earns rewards of up to ₹400 per application, which can help you apply to more colleges for the same spend.
Conclusion
NMAT rewards a focused 30 days. Learn the adaptive rules, put reasoning first, protect your first 10 questions in every section, and fit NMAT mocks into your CAT schedule. If you haven’t registered yet, do it before 10 October.
Frequently Asked Questions
- How do I prepare for NMAT in 30 days?
A: Take one NMAT mock as a diagnostic, then drill Logical Reasoning first, since it needs the most thinking. Keep daily grammar and vocab practice, and write mocks on a fixed weekly schedule. Lock your section order and guessing habits before your first attempt. - Can I crack NMAT while preparing for CAT?
A: Yes. Quant, reasoning and verbal skills overlap heavily. The new work is the adaptive format and the reasoning question types, so add at least a couple of NMAT mocks before CAT. - Which section should I attempt first in NMAT?
A: You choose from six orders. Our expert suggests Logical Reasoning, then Quant, then Language Skills. Practise whichever order you pick in mocks. - Is there negative marking in NMAT?
A: No. Every unanswered question counts as a miss, so attempt all of them. - What is a good NMAT score?
A: Aim for 235+ overall, with 80+ in Quant and Logical Reasoning and 82–85 in Language Skills. - When should I take NMAT?
A: Avoid the first 7–10 days of the window and avoid 21 November. Mid-November or the first week of December works best.
