Overview of MBA CET

The MBA CET is held by the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE), the government body responsible for technical education in Maharashtra. It is one of the major MBA Entrance Exams which give the candidates access to Management colleges across Maharashtra.

The MBA CET Exam is held once every year, usually in the month of March. One major difference in the procedure for the MBA CET Exam is that the MBA CET Exam Score determines the college that you are eligible for admission in. There is no Group Discussion or Personal Interview round like most other MBA Entrance Exams. The only factor that affects the candidature is the domicile of the candidate. Candidates who have a Maharashtra domicile tend to get a benefit from the reservation policy that the DTE has.

The level of difficulty of the MBA CET Exam is usually lower than other MBA Entrance Exams like CAT, XAT, SNAP, etc. One of the major reasons for the lower level of difficulty is the fact that there is no negative marking in the MBA CET Exam. The MBA CET Exam is almost purely a speed test where the candidate who is able to solve the most number of questions within the shortest period of time will get a higher percentile. The absence of negative marking introduces an element of luck and fortune in the equation as the guesses that every candidate makes can elevate their percentile if they get it right.

About DTE: Organizer of the MBA CET Exam

The MBA CET Exam as well as other MHCET Exams is convened by the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE). The Directorate of Technical Education is a government body which is responsible for technical education in the state of Maharashtra. The objective of the DTE is as follows:

  • Improve the research standards in the Technical Education System

One of the major tasks of the DTE Maharashtra is to conduct state level admission tests for candidates wishing to pursue Technical Education. These admission tests include the MBA CET, MHCET Engineering, etc.

MBA CET Exam Pattern

The MBA CET Exam Pattern is quite different from other MBA Entrance Exams. It is more forgiving in the sense that there is no negative marking. It is more of a speed test compared to other MBA Entrance Exams such as CAT, XAT, etc. Some of the salient features about the MBA CET Exam Pattern are:

  • Types of Questions : Multiple Choice
  • Total Number of Questions : 200

The candidate is free to move across sections and questions at any time in the MBA CET Exam although it is generally advisable for the candidates to have a strategy while attempting the MBA CET exam which generally means moving section by section.

MBA CET Notification

The MBA CET Notification will start in January 2020. The registration process is active for approximately a month or a month and a half up to the middle of February 2020. Since the exam takes place so late in the year, the processes are speeded up. The Admit Card is released in early March and the exam takes within the first two weeks.

The MBA CET Exam results will be announced at the end of March followed swiftly by the Common Admission Process (CAP) to determine the colleges that the candidates are eligible to join. One of the reasons for the MBA CET Exam being held so late in the year is that the CAP Process is very similar to the counseling process in engineering colleges. There is no interview process or group discussion for admission through the MBA CET Exam which speeds up the process quite a lot.

MBA CET Syllabus

The MBA CET Exam is divided into 4 sections:

  • Logical Reasoning
  • Abstract Reasoning
  • Quantitative Aptitude
  • Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension

The logical and abstract reasoning sections have somewhat similar questions due to which there may be overlaps in the MBA CET Syllabus for these sections. The topics which are generally tested in this section are:

  • Symbol based questions
  • Linear and Circular Arrangement
  • Blood Relations
  • Venn diagram
  • Sequential Output
  • Directions
  • Syllogism

This is not an exhaustive list but if these topics are prepared for, the candidate should be able to attempt quite a few questions in the MBA CET Exam.

In the Quantitative Ability section, the syllabus is quite similar to CAT. Most of the topics are based on Mathematics that is taught in Class 9 and 10. There are a few differences from CAT apart from the level of questions being lower.

  • The first difference is that, in the MBA CET, data interpretation questions are included in the section
  • Data Sufficiency is also part of the syllabus in the QA section unlike CAT

Most of the other topics are similar to CAT such as Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, Probability, Ratio & Proportion, Numbers, Percentages, etc.

The Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension section in the MBA CET includes a wide variety of topics in its syllabus such as:

  • Vocabulary
  • Parajumbles
  • Error Correction
  • Verbal Reasoning
  • Grammar
  • Reading Comprehension

The biggest advantage of having a rough syllabus for the exam is that it allows the candidate to plan their preparation accordingly. While the above syllabus is not completely extensive, covering these topics should be a good start for the MBA CET Preparation.

Important Dates for MBA CET

There is still some time before the MBA CET Notification is released however the trends of the past years give an indication of the important dates for the MBA CET Exam.

These are the estimated dates according to the trends in the previous couple of years. Based on these dates, the candidates can build the plan for the MBA CET Preparation.

MBA CET Preparation

The MBA CET Exam is simultaneously easy and difficult to prepare for. The level of questions that are asked in these exams compared to other MBA Entrance Exams means that it is quite easy in terms of preparation. However the timing of the exam means that the candidate may be focused on the other processes which might be happening simultaneously. This makes preparing for the MBA CET Exam quite tricky.

The best way to prepare for the MBA CET Exam is to do it concurrently with the preparation for other MBA Entrance Exams. The syllabus of the MBA CET Exam is an amalgamation of the syllabus of other MBA Entrance Exams which means that the preparation for these exams is simultaneously preparing the candidate for the MBA CET Exam as well.

In order to cover any shortfall, the candidate should consistently give mock tests which would allow them to understand how to attempt a speed test such as MBA CET.
