List of Documents Required for IELTS Registration

The primary document required for IELTS registration is a valid passport, as they cannot apply for the exam without a passport. Students must carry a recent colored passport-size photograph and their passport on examination day. The passport number of an IELTS test taker serves as a prima facie proof of identification needed for registration. If the test-taker is under 18, they must present a ‘consent form for minors’ before taking the exam.

Students must have the following list of documents for IELTS registration:

  • Valid Passport: A scanned copy of the front and back of your passport is required.
  • Colored Photograph: Your recent passport-size colored photograph is needed on your exam day.
  • Minor Consent Form: You must submit a 'minor consent form' if you are under 18.

Modes of Exam Registration

There are three modes for registering for the IELTS exam:

  • Online Registration: You may book your test online on the IELTS official website and pay the exam fees using a credit card or net banking. 
  • Offline Registration: There are two main ways to register through offline mode:
    • In-person Registration: You can register offline at any IDP branch or Input Node.
    • Registration through Courier: You can register through courier enclosing a Demand Draft, ICICI deposit, or HDFC deposit slip specifying the amount of exam fees.

How to Register for the IELTS Academic Exam?

The IELTS exam registration procedure outlines the availability of the Paper-delivered exam on 48 scheduled dates per year and the Computer-delivered exam seven days a week and three times daily. There is no time restriction for taking the test; candidates can retake it anytime. However, they must pay the complete test fees each time. The IDP IELTS registration process must be completed each time they want to take the test. The IELTS exam can be booked online or in person at the nearest IDP location.

Online Registration Process

The Online IELTS exam registration process can be completed effortlessly in the comfort of your home.

Step-by-step Instructions for Online IELTS Exam Registration:

Step 1: Go to the official website of IELTS.


Step 2: Register for the IELTS exam. Select your desired exam-

  • Computer-delivered IELTS
  • Pen and Paper-based IELTS
  • Computer-delivered IELTS for UKVI
  • Pen and Paper-based IELTS for UKVI
  • Life Skills

Step 3: Select your test type-

  • IELTS Academic
  • IELTS General Training

Step 4: Select your preferred test location from the available test centres in India. Click on ‘Book Now’.


Step 5: Select your preferred test date and time slot from the available options. Then, click on ‘Book Now’.


Step 6: Fill out your personal information, including your first and last name, date of birth, passport number, passport validity date, mobile number, and email ID. Confirm and cross-verify the details and click on ‘Proceed’.


Step 7: Add your registration details, including your residential/postal address, city, state, pin code, country of nationality, first language, occupation, reason for taking the test, and other relevant details. Then click on ‘Submit’.


Step 8: Upload your passport copy, both front and back. You can upload your passport in JPG/PNG/JPEG/ PDF file formats with a maximum size of 1 MB. Then, click on ‘Upload’.


Step 9: Fill out the recognized organizations where you want to share your TRF or IELTS results. This field is optional. If you share your results with selected organizations/universities, specify the details like country, organisation/university, etc. Then click on ‘Add’ and finally click on ‘Submit’. Click ' Skip ' if you do not want to share your results with any organization/university.


Step 10: You must check your details thoroughly before paying the IELTS fees. Click ' Edit details ' if you want to make any application changes. You can also click ‘Print’ to keep the information for your record. Once all the details are confirmed, click ‘Proceed to Pay’.


Step 11: Confirm your test details like ‘Test Date’, ‘Test Type’, and ‘Test City’. Click "Pay Now" after choosing your method of payment.


Step 12: You can print the acknowledgement receipt once payment has been processed. Following online registration, you will get an acknowledgement via the email/phone number you provided. You can schedule an appointment online for paper-based IELTS on your selected day and time. If you don't get the requested time slot, one will be automatically provided to you.


Offline Registration Process

There are two modes that you can follow for the offline registration process: In-person Registration and Registration through Courier. Now let’s discuss these offline registration modes in detail:

In-person Registration

Visit your local IDP IELTS branch/head office or Input Node. You can register using one of the two approaches listed below:

Approach 1:

You can register for the exam and pay the fees online using the office computer. You will receive a quick confirmation of your seat. This process is the same as online registration.

  • Attach a copy of your Passport (both front and back pages) and any observation pages.
  • Return the signed Terms & Conditions form. Please read it well before handing it out.
  • Get an instant acknowledgement letter confirming your seat in the exam.

Approach 2:

  • Fill up the application form provided at the IDP office/Input Node.
  • Read and sign the Terms and Conditions paper included in the application form.
  • Include a photocopy of your passport (front and back) and observation pages.
  • Pay the exam fees using a valid credit/debit/ATM card or with a Demand Draft (written in favor of "IDP Education India Private Limited, payable in New Delhi"). It should be made at any bank on the approved list of banks in the Terms & Conditions document.
  • Deposit cash at an ICICI bank branch using a personalized ICICI deposit slip, which may be printed from the IDP IELTS website or picked up at any IDP branch office/Input Node. As evidence of payment, the original customer copy of the customized ICICI deposit slip must be turned over to the IDP branch office or the Input Node.
  • Ask the employees at the IDP branch or input node to enter your application into the online registration system on your behalf and, upon payment, to provide you with an acknowledgement sheet for your test booking and a temporary seat reservation.
  • Please remember that if you paid by bank draft, your seat confirmation will be contingent on the bank draft being realized.

Registration through Courier

You may get the application form at www.ieltsidpindia.com, the local IDP branch office, or Input Node.

  • Complete the application form.
  • Return the signed Terms & Conditions form. Please read it well before handing it out.
  • Submit a photocopy of your passport (first and final page) and any observation pages.
  • Attach your exam fee Demand Draft in favor of "IDP Education India Private Limited", payable in New Delhi. It should be made at any bank included in the authorized list of banks (given in the Terms & Conditions document), or, if depositing cash, attach the original client copy of the ICICI deposit slip.
  • Submit the fully completed application form, along with all required papers and the exam fees, to:

Exam Payment Method for IELTS Academic

You can pay the IELTS exam fees through any of the following methods or modes:

  • Netbanking
  • Credit/Debit Card
  • Demand Draft drawn in favor of ‘IDP EDUCATION INDIA PRIVATE LIMITED, Payable at New Delhi’.
  • Bank Deposit: Candidates can deposit cash at ICICI/HDFC branches using a custom-made deposit slip from the IELTS IDP India website or local branch and must include an original customer copy in the IELTS application form.

How to Check Exam Slot Availability?

You can go through the following steps to check the exam slot availability:

  1. Candidates must choose an IELTS Test Center in their selected area and verify available test dates to determine exam slot availability. Test dates might vary based on location and demand, so it's best to prepare early.
  2. Candidates must complete the registration form on the official IELTS website, providing personal, identifying, and contact information and selecting the exam type (Academic or General Training). The IELTS exam price can be paid online using credit/debit cards, net banking, or other ways.
  3. After registering and paying, applicants will get a confirmation email or receipt with their exam date, time, and location. Reserve your IELTS slot well in advance to ensure your preferred test day and venue since popular dates might fill up rapidly.

Process to Reschedule IELTS Exam

The process to reschedule the IELTS exam is very simple. You can plan a new exam date or postpone your current one online or by contacting the testing facility where you registered. Before rescheduling the test, you must select a deferred exam date within 3 months of the original. If you want to retake the IELTS after three months, you must cancel the exam and re-register later. In addition, you must keep the following things in mind before rescheduling or cancelling your exam:

  • If you decide to postpone or cancel your exam more than five weeks prior to the planned exam date, you will get a refund, less an administrative fee.
  • If you postpone or cancel your test within five weeks of the scheduled date, you will be charged the entire amount unless you suffer from a significant medical emergency.
  • The local administrative fee will be deducted from your reimbursement if you provide a medical certificate within five days of the test date.

If you want to reschedule your IELTS test online, then the following rules apply:

  • Only if your scheduled exam date is at least 15 days after the day you request a transfer are you eligible to postpone your IELTS exam.
  • You can postpone the exam date for up to 34 days without giving a reason.

What is the IELTS Exam Registration Deadline?

There is no particular deadline for registering for the IELTS exam. However, the applicants are advised to book their desired exam slots well in advance. Many IELTS experts recommend applying for the exam at least 2-3 months before your intended exam date. Yes. You can apply for IELTS with an address different from your passport. While filling out the IELTS registration form, You must specify your current residential address, as your TRF will be sent to your home address, not your passport address.

According to the IELTS official website, the test dates may be reserved as early as three months before the chosen test date and as late as one week before the test day. The dates must, however, be reserved as soon as possible.

You must write an email to the IDP or British Council requesting a change of date of birth. You must describe the error in detail and write the correct date of birth. You must attach a copy of your TRF and passport to validate your date of birth. You will receive the revised IELTS test report within 5-10 days of emailing.
