Established in 2009 as the ninth IIM in India, the Indian Institute of Management Ranchi (IIM Ranchi) has rapidly grown into one of the country's most respected business schools. Recognised as an Institute of National Importance under the IIM Act, IIM Ranchi currently holds the #18 rank in NIRF 2025 under the Management category. IIM Calcutta mentors the institute and operates from its permanent campus in Prabandhan Nagar, Nayasarai Road, Ranchi, Jharkhand.
IIM Ranchi admission 2026 is open for its flagship MBA (General Management), MBA-HR (Human Resource Management), MBA-BA (Business Analytics), IPM (5-year Integrated Programme in Management), Executive MBA, and PhD programmes. Admission to the MBA programmes is through CAT scores, followed by a Written Ability Test (WAT) and Personal Interview (PI) under the Joint Admission Process (JAP 2026).
This guide covers everything you need to know, from eligibility criteria and CAT cutoffs to fee structure and final placement statistics.
IIM Ranchi was established in 2009 with mentorship from IIM Calcutta under the direction of the Ministry of Education, Government of India. It is a member of notable global organisations including the AACSB Business Education Alliance, EFMD Global, and the Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME). The institute has a growing alumni network of over 10,000 professionals excelling across sectors in India and internationally.
IIM Ranchi holds a unique distinction within the IIM ecosystem: it is the only IIM to offer a dedicated, full-time MBA in Human Resource Management. Alongside this, it offers an MBA in Business Analytics, a programme built around a ‘manager-first analytics’ philosophy, and an Integrated Programme in Management (IPM) that combines BBA and MBA education over five years. These specialist offerings, combined with a strong emphasis on AI integration, ethics, and social impact, differentiate IIM Ranchi from its peers.
The table below summarises the key institutional facts about IIM Ranchi, covering its founding year, location, NIRF ranking, flagship programmes, and contact details, useful for a quick overview before diving into the admission process.

IIM Ranchi offers a range of full-time management programmes across postgraduate, integrated, executive, and doctoral levels. Each programme is designed with a distinct philosophy combining analytical depth, functional expertise, and a commitment to ethical leadership.
IIM Ranchi’s flagship two-year, full-time residential MBA develops managers who can lead across functions and industries. The programme also integrates AI-focused courses and ‘Working with AI’ style assessments.
IIM Ranchi is the only IIM to offer a full-time, two-year MBA in Human Resource Management. This specialist programme focuses on advanced HR practices, strategic people management, and organisational development.
Launched in 2021, the MBA-BA programme is built on a ‘manager-first analytics’ philosophy, developing managers who can translate business problems into analytical questions, build and evaluate models, and communicate data-driven insights.
The IPM is a full-time, five-year integrated postgraduate programme combining BBA and MBA degrees. The first four terms (three years) build a multidisciplinary foundation drawn from humanities, social sciences, arts, and sciences.
The Executive MBA is a two-year management programme designed for working professionals in hybrid mode, combining online learning with campus immersion modules. It enables experienced professionals to upgrade their management skills without pausing their careers.
IIM Ranchi MBA admission 2026 will be conducted through the Joint Admission Process (JAP 2026). IIM Ranchi participates in JAP 2026 along with IIM Kashipur, IIM Raipur, and IIM Tiruchirappalli, with IIM Raipur serving as the coordinating institute. The entire admission process operates in two clearly defined stages.
An initial shortlist for the PI process is prepared purely on the basis of CAT 2025 performance. Candidates must meet both sectional and overall percentile requirements. The shortlisted candidates from all participating JAP 2026 IIMs are merged into a combined shortlist for further processing. Meeting the qualifying cutoff does not guarantee shortlisting; the actual call cutoff is typically higher, depending on the number and profile of applicants in each category.
Shortlisted candidates are invited for an offline Written Ability Test (WAT) and Personal Interview (PI). After the WAT-PI process, IIM Ranchi prepares a Consolidated Merit List (CML) for each programme (MBA, MBA-HR, MBA-BA) separately. Final admission offers are made based on candidates’ rankings in the CML within their respective categories.
The table below shows how the Consolidated Merit List (CML) for IIM Ranchi MBA admission is constructed. Each component carries a specific percentage weightage, with the CAT scaled score holding the highest share in the final selection decision.

IIM Ranchi operates a two-tier cutoff system for the 2026–28 batch under JAP 2026. The first tier is the minimum eligibility cutoff, the floor CAT 2025 percentile required to register for JAP 2026. The second tier is the PI shortlisting cutoff, the actual percentile at which candidates received PI calls, released by IIM Raipur (JAP 2026 coordinator) after CAT 2025 results. Meeting the minimum eligibility cutoff is necessary but not sufficient for receiving a PI call.
For MBA admission to the 2026–28 batch, IIM Ranchi participates in JAP 2026 along with IIM Kashipur, IIM Raipur, and IIM Tiruchirappalli, with IIM Raipur as the coordinating institute.
Table below outlines the minimum eligibility CAT 2025 sectional and overall percentile cutoffs required to register for JAP 2026. These are registration thresholds only, actual PI call cutoffs are significantly higher.
