How to Prepare for SSC CGL Maths Section?

QA is the most important section, or you can say, the key section for aspirants who wish to make it to the merit list. It occupies the top spot in terms of weightage in the written portion. 50/200 in Prelims and 200/400 in Main makes it 250/600, or 41.67% of your success (or failure) in SSC CGL depends on Quant. The questions in this section are designed to test the aspirants' ability to appropriately use numbers and their number sense. The scope of QA is clearly defined and is limited to class 10th-level mathematics. If you have good command over this section, you can score 40-45 marks easily. All you need to do is attempt the questions with good accuracy. The level of difficulty of this section is expected to be moderate.

The Mathematics syllabus can be divided into three parts: Arithmetic, Data Interpretation & Advanced Maths. Elaborating further, this section consists of questions from topics like Profit and Loss; Time, Distance, and Work; Averages; Alligation; Elementary Mensuration; Algebra; Trigonometry; Geometry, etc.

While preparing for SSC, it is crucial for aspirants to understand the exam syllabus and important steps and stages that are included in the selection process. Provided below are the links to the subject-wise syllabus of the SSC Exams.

Previous Year Papers

Staff Selection Commission (SSC) holds the Combined Graduate Level Examination (CGL) for recruitment to different grade B posts under the Government of India. The minimum Educational Qualification required to appear for SSC is Graduation from a recognized University. You can find the previous year Paper here.

SSC CGL Selection Procedure

The selection process comprises in two online Objective Type examinations - Tier I & Tier II. From 2016-17, SSC has scrapped the interview round and replaced it with a descriptive test as Tier III round. Tier IV is the last round that tests a candidate on his/her computer efficiency. Now, let us look at all the rounds:

  • Tier - I: Online Examination
  • This is an online objective test of 200 marks. In this round, candidates are evaluated on their Quantitative, English, Reasoning, and General Awareness skills. The time limit for the exam is 1 hour. Admit cards for this exam are available in May.

  • Tier - II: Online Examination
  • This round consists of four papers of 200 marks each. Each paper is to be completed in 2 hours. While the first two papers (Quant & English) are common for all posts, the third and fourth are conducted for specific posts only. Statistics paper is held only for Statistical Investigator Post and General Studies paper is for Assistant Audit Officer post only. There is negative marking in both Tier I and Tier II exams. Further, there is no sectional time limit or cut off for both the Tiers.

  • Tier - III: Paper-based Descriptive Test
  • Candidates who have qualified Tiers I and II appear for this descriptive type paper carrying 100 marks. The duration of paper is 1 hour.

  • Tier IV: Computer Proficiency/Data Entry Skill Test
  • This round tests a candidate's ability in Computer Proficiency. This paper is just qualifying in nature. It is conducted for specific posts only.
