IIMs in India - Brief Overview

The Indian Institutes of Management, commonly known as IIMs, are famous for their management programs, including MBA, PGP, Executive MBA, and other courses. IIM Admission Process 2025

• Stage 1- The first stage is appearing for the Common Aptitude Test or CAT Exam conducted by the IIMs (GMAT for international candidates).
• Stage 2- After clearing the required cut-offs and the composite score, a candidate is called for a Written Test/Group Discussion and Personal Interview (PI). The candidate must provide 2 letters of recommendation from people who know them closely for academic and professional validation.
• Stage 3- The final offers of admission to candidates in each category will be made strictly on the basis of the final aggregate score, taking into account various weights such as work experience, gender, school board, etc.

IIMs in India: Courses, Fees, Placements & Seat Intake

There are numerous management courses offered by the IIMs along with diplomas, certificate programs, and even undergraduate courses by a select few. Given below is a list of programs offered by each IIM.

1. IIM Ahmedabad

IIM Ahmedabad was established on 11 December 1961 in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, with the active support and collaboration of the Government of India, the Government of Gujarat, Harvard Business School, and prominent members of Indian industry.

2. IIM Bangalore

IIM Bangalore was established on 28 October 1973 in Bangalore, Karnataka by the Government of India. It was the third IIM to be established after IIM Calcutta and IIM Ahmedabad. The IIM Bangalore campus is situated across 100 acres and is located on Bannerghatta Road in the southern part of Bangalore.

3. IIM Calcutta

IIM Calcutta was established on 28 November 1961 in Calcutta, West Bengal by the Government of India. It was the first IIM to be established in the country. The IIM Calcutta campus is situated across 135 acres and is located in Joka on the outskirts.

4. IIM Kozhikode

IIM Kozhikode was established in 1996 in Calicut (Kozhikode), Kerala by the Government of India. It was the fifth IIM to be established in the country. Spread over about 112.5 acres of land, the campus of IIM Kozhikode is situated on two hillocks in the Kunnamangalam Area of the ancient city of Calicut in Kerala.

5. IIM Lucknow

IIM Lucknow was established in 1984 in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, by the Government of India. It was the fourth IIM to be established in the country. The IIM Lucknow campus is situated across 185 acres and is located in Prabandh Nagar on the outskirts of Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India. Another campus has been established in Noida, spread over 20 acres.

6. IIM Indore

IIM Indore was established in 1996 in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, by the Government of India. It was the sixth IIM to be established in the country. The 193-acre campus of IIM Indore is located at Prabandh Shikhar, on Rau-Pithampur Road, close to the Pithampur Special Economic Zone, off Agra-Bombay Highway

7. IIM Raipur

IIM Raipur was established in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, by the Government of India in 2010. It is one of the new generation IIMs of the country. The 200-acre IIM Raipur campus is located in Atal Nagar, Naya Raipur, the new capital city of the state of Chhattisgarh.

8. IIM Ranchi

IIM Ranchi was established in Ranchi, Jharkhand, by the Government of India in 2009. It is one of the new generation IIMs of the country. The permanent campus of IIM Ranchi is located at Birhar village on the Khunti-Karra road, about 35 kilometres (22 mi) from Ranchi.

9. IIM Rohtak

IIM Rohtak, the tenth IIM, was established in 2010 in Rohtak, Haryana, by the Government of India. Located within the National Capital Region (NCR) of India. The state-of-the-art campus spread over an area of 200 acres is strategically located on National Highway 10 or NH10 and is well connected to Delhi.

10. IIM Trichy

IIM Trichy was established in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu by the Government of India on 4th January 2011. It was the 11th IIM set up in the country. Its 172.27 acres campus is located on the Tiruchirappalli-Pudukkottai highway. IIM Trichy has a satellite campus in Chennai where it offers a two-year PG course for working professionals.

11. IIM Udaipur

IIM Udaipur was established in Udaipur, Rajasthan, by the Government of India in 2011. It is one of the new generation IIMs of the country. The 300-acre permanent campus of IIM Udaipur is located in Balicha, about 8 km from the old city.

12. IIM Kashipur

IIM Kashipur was established in Kashipur, Uttarakhand by the Government of India in 2011. It is one of the new generation IIMs of the country. It has a 200 acres sprawling campus which is located 25 km from Jim Corbett National Park in the serene town of Kashipur.

13. IIM Shillong

IIM Shillong was established in 2007 in Shillong, Meghalaya, by the Government of India. It was the seventh IIM to be established in the country. The sprawling new 120-acre permanent campus of IIM Shillong at Umsawli is set amidst natural greenery and is replete with all the facilities to make it a temple of study.

14. IIM Visakhapatnam

IIM Visakhapatnam was established in Andhra Pradesh by the Government of India in 2015. It is currently functioning from its temporary campus at Andhra University. The permanent 241.50-acre campus is currently under construction at Gambheeram village on the outskirts of the city of Visakhapatnam.

15. IIM Jammu

IIM Jammu was established by the Government of India in 2016. It is currently the youngest of all the IIMs. It inaugurated its off-campus at Srinagar on January 24, 2020. Currently, IIM Jammu operates from the Old University Campus at Canal Road, Jammu. The proposed 200-acre permanent campus of IIM Jammu is under construction.

16. IIM Nagpur

The setup of IIM Nagpur was announced by the Government of India in 2014, and the institute was established in Nagpur on 23rd July 2015. It recently shifted to its new state of the art new 132-acre permanent campus, situated at MIHAN, Nagpur, Maharashtra, in November 2021. It also has a satellite campus in Pune, which offers a few courses.

17. IIM Amritsar

IIM Amritsar was established in 2015 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development with the support of the Government of Punjab. It is the 15th IIM and is currently operating from its temporary campus at the Punjab Institute of Technology Building. The 60-acre permanent campus of IIM Amritsar is currently under construction.

18. IIM Sambalpur

IIM Sambalpur was announced by the Ministry of Human Resource Development in 2014 and the institute was established in 2015. It is currently operating from its temporary campus at Sambalpur University. The 237-acres permanent campus of IIM Sambalpur is currently under construction.

19. IIM Sirmaur

One of the younger IIMs of the country, IIM Sirmaur was established in Himachal Pradesh by the Government of India in 2015. It is currently functioning from its temporary campus at Paonta Sahib, District Sirmaur, Himachal Pradesh. The permanent 210-acre campus is currently under construction.

20. IIM Bodh Gaya

The 16th IIM, IIM Bodh Gaya, was set up as per the 2014 Union Budget plan of India alongside 5 other IIMs. It was originally called IIM Bihar. It functioned under the mentorship of IIM Calcutta. IIM Bodh Gaya started operating its first academic batch on 31st August 2015. Currently, it operates from a temporary campus at Magadh University.

21. IIM Mumbai

The 21st IIM, recently added to the list of IIMs, is one of India's top B-schools. Formerly known as NITIE, it is a dream place for all engineering candidates to get into. It is a prestigious management school located in Mumbai, India. IIM Mumbai is ranked among the top management schools in India by various reputable publications and is known for its rigorous academic programs, faculty expertise, and industry connections.
