Marti Mannariah Gurunath Chair Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Madras
Prof. Raghunathan Rengaswamy, a fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering, is the Marti Mannariah Gurunath institute chair professor at the Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Madras and a core member of the Robert Bosch Center for Data Science and AI (RBC-DSAI), IITM. He is also currently the Dean Global Engagement, and he has played a crucial role in shaping IIT Madras' first offshore campus in Zanzibar, and has helped formulate the Data Science and AI undergraduate program. Prior to this, he was a Professor, Chemical Engineering and co-director of the Process Control and Optimization Consortium (PCOC) at Texas Tech University, Lubbock, TX USA, Associate and full Professor at Clarkson University, Potsdam, NY, and Assistant Professor at IIT Bombay, Mumbai, India.
Prof. Rengaswamy’s major research interests are in the areas of Data Science / Machine Learning / AI and applications of these ideas in the areas of Process Systems Engineering, Energy systems, Droplet Microfluidics and Systems Biology. His prolific work encompasses systems engineering, energy, and data science, evident in 150+ papers, 6 patents, and an h-index of 45. Prof. Rengaswamy has also co-authored a book titled “Data Science for Engineers” along with Dr. Resmi Suresh, IIT Guwahati. His work in AI has received best paper awards in international journals and conferences. He is also the recipient of several teaching awards and the INAE Young Engineer award.
Together with Prof. Shankar Narasimhan, he has offered a course titled Data Science for Engineers. This course along with another course titled ‘Python for Data Science’ have had a combined enrolment of more than 250,000 students over several offerings. Raghu’ s graduate students are in faculty positions in several IITs and in the USA. Raghu consults in the areas of DS/AI for several companies in India and abroad and is in the advisory committee of CII AI center of excellence and is a co-founder of three start-ups incubated at IIT Madras.
