How to get an IIM shortlist?

Indian Institute of Managements (IIMs) are the most sought after business schools in the country. There are total 20 IIMs in the country. The first IIM, IIM Calcutta, was established in the year 1961 under the Nehru Government. The programs offered at IIMs include Postgraduate Management Programs and Executive Programs, among others.

After the passing of the IIM Bill in 2017, IIMs have been declared as institutes of national importance. In addition, IIMs are now autonomous institutes and can grant degrees to their graduates. Before this, the IIMs used to grant a Postgraduate diploma which was considered equivalent to an MBA.

Common Admission Test (CAT)

Students who wish to be considered for admissions at IIMs need to write CAT. It is a three hour online entrance exam conducted once every year. The exam is administered by one of the old IIMs each year on a rotational basis.

Eligibility Criteria for CAT

  • Candidates should have a Bachelor's Degree in any discipline from a recognized university or institute. (minimum 3 years)
  • The minimum aggregate required for General & NC-OBC students is 50% and the same for SC/ST/PwD students is 45%
  • There is no age restriction to write CAT

IIMs Shortlisting Criteria

Candidates are shortlisted for the second stage of the selection process (GD/WAT/PI) on the basis of several parameters - one of which is the CAT scores. The process of shortlisting is separate for each of the older IIMs. As for the new and super new IIMs, there is a Common Admission Process. The weightage of the parameters considered like Academic Profile, Work Experience, varies from one IIM to the other.

Weightage of CAT Score* (as per CAT’18)

IIM - A 70%
IIM - B 40%
IIM - C 56%
IIM - L 60%
