Is an IPM degree equivalent to BBA followed by MBA from top IIMs?

IPM was introduced by IIM Indore in 2011 for students at the undergraduate level, and since then 8 batches have graduated. Here are a few factors you can take into account to gauge whether you should opt for a 5-year BBA+MBA format program, or a 3-year undergraduate degree.

  1. Curriculum: Over the first three foundation years of the IPM program, the student is trained to take on all courses and be at par with their MBA batch peers. All subject streams are taught in the introductory years, from science, humanities, and social sciences. In addition, the institute emphasizes the holistic development of the students by backing clubs, initiatives, alumni networks, semester-abroad exchange programs, and more to participate.
  2. Placement scope: While IIM’s network is considered self-sustained due to the alumni network participating actively in the placement process of fresh graduates, the institute attracts the likes of BCG, HSBC, Accenture, Amazon, and Unilever among others. The highest package offered to IIM Indore’s batch of 2023 is â?¹1.1 crores, and the average salary to be offered is â?¹24lakhs+.
  3. Time: While IPM offers BBA and MBA in one program, it requires 5 years to acquire two degrees. On the other hand, BBA followed by an MBA require the same amount of time, given that the student isn’t taking gap years, or getting work experience between the two degrees.
  4. Eligibility of entrances: IPM requires clearing cut-offs for IPMAT and JIPMAT. On the other hand, pursuing a BBA degree would require you to take multiple entrance tests at the university level, followed by another round of entrances at the post-graduate level. This also increases the level of competition, given that MBA entrances like CAT have 10 times more test-takers.
  5. Fee: The fee for IPM in the five IIMs offering ranges from â?¹29lakhs to â?¹38lakhs. Whereas, pursuing an MBA degree from the top IIMs alone is over â?¹20lakhs.

In conclusion, opting for BBA followed by MBA requires double preparations, time, application procedures, and additional eligibility criteria coming in.
