How Do You Apply? The Admission Process, Step by Step

Getting into IIM Ranchi IPM takes two steps. Do not skip either one. Many students forget step two and lose their chance, so pay attention here.

Step 1: Register for IPMAT

IIM Ranchi does not run its own entrance test. It simply trusts the IPMAT score, which is conducted by IIM Indore. So first, you sign up for IPMAT on the official IIM Indore website. Fill in your details, pay the fee, and you will get an IPMAT number. It looks something like AT27XXXXX. Save this number. You will need it again very soon for further admission and counselling steps.

Step 2: Apply to IIM Ranchi Separately

Here is the part students often miss. Giving IPMAT is not enough. You must also fill out a separate form on the IIM Ranchi website. In this form, you will type in your IPMAT application number, upload your documents, and pay a small application fee. Only after this step is your application to IIM Ranchi complete.

Step 3: Wait for the Shortlist

After IPMAT results come out, IIM Ranchi looks only at your IPMAT score to decide who gets called for an interview. Half the weight goes to your Verbal Ability score, and half goes to your Quant score (both the short answer and MCQ parts combined).

Step 4: The Personal Interview

If you are shortlisted, you will be called for a face-to-face interview. This usually happens in cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Ranchi. They will ask about your school subjects, your general knowledge, and how well you can express yourself.

Step 5: The Final List

Your final score has three parts. Your IPMAT score is worth 50 per cent. Your interview is worth 30 per cent. Your Class 10 and Class 12 marks together are worth 20 per cent. If you are a girl or a transgender candidate, you also get 5 bonus marks added at the very end. This bonus is extra; it does not eat into anyone else's marks.

Who Can Apply? Eligibility for IIM Ranchi IPM

Good news. The rules here are simple, and most students who have finished or are finishing Class 12 already qualify. There is no need for Maths as a compulsory subject, and students from Science, Commerce, or Arts can all apply.

What You Need

General, EWS, NC-OBC

SC, ST, PwD

Class 10 marks

At least 60%

At least 55%

Class 12 marks

At least 60%

At least 55%

Your percentage is worked out the way your own board calculates it. If your board does not give a clear percentage rule, then the average of all subjects on your marksheet is used instead. One more thing worth knowing: IIM Ranchi only accepts IPMAT Indore scores now. It stopped accepting SAT scores from the 2024 to 2029 batches. So IPMAT is your only way in.

How Much Does It Cost? IIM Ranchi IPM Fees

Let us talk money, because this matters a lot to most students. Based on the last known official figures (previous years’), the fee for the first three years adds up to about Rs 17.25 lakh. This does not include a few small extra charges like the caution deposit, alumni fee, and mess bill. For years 4 and 5, you pay whatever the regular MBA fee is at that time, since you join the MBA batch directly.

IIM Ranchi has not announced the exact 2027 fee yet. Fees can move up a little bit each year, so please check the latest official Fee Structure PDF on iimranchi.ac.in before you plan your budget.

Worried About Money? There Is a Scholarship

Here is some good news for students who are talented but tight on funds. IIM Ranchi gives out Rs 1 crore every single year, shared across 25 scholarships. These cover students from MBA, MBA-HR, MBA-BA, and IPM, all together. If you come from the SC, ST, or PwD category, you get a little extra consideration too. So money should not be the only reason you say no to this dream.

The IPMAT Exam - What Will You Actually Face?

IIM Ranchi does not make its own test. It simply trusts the IPMAT exam conducted by IIM Indore. The test runs for 120 minutes on a computer, and it has 90 questions worth 360 marks in total.

Here is a tip worth remembering. The Short Answer section has no negative marking. So even if you are not 100 per cent sure, it is always worth trying an answer there. You have nothing to lose.

What Score Do You Need? Expected Cutoff for 2027

IIM Ranchi does not officially publish a cutoff list like some other IIMs do. But based on past trends, students in the General category usually need somewhere between 185 and 205 marks out of 360 to have a fair shot. For the SC category, the range is usually closer to 95 to 105 marks.

Treat these numbers as a rough guide only, not a guarantee, since IIM Ranchi has not confirmed an official cutoff.

How Many Seats, and How Are They Shared?

Based on the last cycle, IIM Ranchi is expected to offer around 120 seats for the 2027-32 batch, though this number is not confirmed yet. Seats are shared out as per Government of India rules, like this:

Category

Share of Seats

General and EWS

Open merit, plus 10% reserved for EWS

NC-OBC

27%

SC

15%

ST

7.5%

PwD

What Will You Actually Study?

The first three years are called the Foundation Phase. This part is split into nine terms, and you will study a mix of subjects, things like economics, maths, psychology, business basics, and even some arts and humanities. It is designed to make you a well-rounded thinker, not just a numbers person.

After your fifth term, you do something called a Social Internship. It is a hands-on project that gets you out of the classroom and into the real world. Then, at the end of year 3, there is a tough checkpoint. You need a CGPA of at least 4.5 to move ahead into the MBA phase. If you do not clear this, you still walk away with a BBA degree, so your three years are not wasted either way.

Years 4 and 5 are simple to understand. You join the regular IIM Ranchi MBA batch and study exactly what the MBA students study. Same classroom, same faculty, same opportunities.

What Happens After You Graduate? Placements

IPM students are placed together with the MBA batch, not separately. IIM Ranchi has not released IPM-only placement numbers yet, since the program is still fairly new. But here is what we know from the latest MBA batch for the year 2024-25.

The average pay was around Rs 19.24 to 19.29 lakh per year. The highest pay touched Rs 50.39 lakh per year. Every single student got placed; that is a 100 per cent placement rate. Over 90 companies came to hire, including names like Capgemini, Infosys, and Deloitte.
